My name is Salmon, though I prefer to be called Paul. I graduated CSU Chico with a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering and 4 years of experience as a Calculus I tutor in the university's math learning lab and 6 months as an elementary school tutor for ELA and Math. Throughout those years of experience, I would make sure that students work extra hard to retain the knowledge of each particular subject they needed help on. Whether it be through homework help or test prep I would work with students on them in a collaborative setting. My experience with Calculus goes back to my senior years of high school. Initially I felt challenged with the subject, especially with how the instructor would go about teaching it. But overtime, I got used to it once I grasped his effective method of analyzing the roots of the problems with visuals, tackling them on our own time to enhance our understanding of them, and even working in collaborative settings to make sure the class keeps up with the pace.
My approach as a tutor, whether teaching elementary or college students, involves taking careful steps to problem solving without skipping any imperative steps and using small lessons before we get to the complicated ones. I ask students what they're studying to get an idea or feel of what they need help on, then do a process of how the problem at hand is to be solved while giving creative hints. I even encourage students to try the next problem and see if they can solve it themselves so they can get full confidence on the subject which I believe can be very effective. Usually, I would teach college freshmen and sophomores taking classes like Calculus I and groups of elementary school kids in Math and ELA subjects. As for related academic achievements, I scored a 4 in the AP Calculus test in high school and got A's in Calculus I and Calculus III.
I look forward to working with students and sharing my knowledge. Please do not hesitate to contact me about scheduling a lesson or additional questions!
