Hello! My name is Luis and I recently added my history tutoring services on the Wyzant website as a way to get back into the field of education. Hello! My name is Luis and I recently added my history tutoring services on the Wyzant website as a way to get back into the field of education. In the spring of 2021, I completed my bachelor's degree in history with an emphasis on teaching and pedagogy. I am currently at the end of my master’s program in history with plans to apply to a Ph.D. history program in the fall. My dream is to become a university professor and a visiting museum curator. If such an opportunity were to come my way, I’d love to host a traveling TV show based on art, history, and culture. In addition, I love to read a good novel in my family's living room, and enjoy sharing and listening to a good story. Every individual is unique and is worthy of neighborly love which is a philosophy that resides in me.
When it comes to my teaching experience, I began as a freelance tutor in the midst of the pandemic and helped two family friends successfully pass the AP World History exams. At the start of 2021, I worked as an elementary school tutor at the Kinder2College Saturday Academy (sponsored by the University of Southern California) to help students develop their reading and writing skills. After this, I worked as a full-time teacher at a Catholic middle school in the South Los Angeles neighborhood to provide instruction to students in grades 6th, 7th, and 8th. These students were from an under resourced low-income/working-class neighborhood in the city of Los Angeles that required a lot of time, patience, and attention. Coming from a similar background, I understood the assigned work that laid ahead which turned into a calling to become an educator for those in pursuit of not only achieving academic success but also living a life with purpose and meaning.
My most recent experience in teaching extends beyond the conventional classroom. I was a museum educator at both the Japanese American National Museum and at the Autry Museum of the American West. It is here that I truly felt the calling to become a historian, educator, and a professor.
