Hey, I'm Ryan! During my research career, I have become an expert at manipulating, visualizing, and understanding complex data using Python and MATLAB. I want to share my understanding and skills with you! If you're looking for help with an assignment/project, or lessons to build your Python or MATLAB skills, please reach out to me! I am highly experienced in scientific computing, including bioinformatics, signal processing, image processing, and machine learning. I can also help you with specific software tools including Psychtoolbox, PsychoPy, Seurat, Scanpy, SLEAP, DeepLabCut, Kilosort, or phy.

I am currently a neuroscience PhD Student at UCLA and I graduated with a BS in neurobiology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. While I've always been passionate about biology and the brain, I have gained an immense passion for using code to understand data throughout my research career. The world (including our understanding of the brain) relies upon making sense of data that we can collect, manipulate, and visualize. While there are vast online resources for coding and data science, these can be difficult to wade through and build real, practical understanding from. In my experience, working alongside an expert like myself is the best way to build coding and data science skills. Teaching myself to code and work with large datasets has given me tremendous insight into great ways to help you build fundamental understanding and practical skills in the data science world. I am an excellent, patient communicator with a wealth of understanding and helpful examples to meet your learning goals.

I am a PhD student in neuroscience at UCLA who has spent the last 4 years analyzing data with Python and MATLAB. I have worked extensively with large calcium imaging (a proxy for neural activity) and behavioral datasets to understand how the brain guides behavior. I am also an expert in bioinformatics, with a focus on single-cell RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq) and spatial transcriptomics data.

I have built large data processing pipelines for use by my team, as well as implemented various regression and decoding analyses. I have also developed many custom MATLAB tools for data visualization that are used extensively by my team.

I am a highly experienced experimental and computational neuroscientist with 5+ years of experience with coursework and research at UCLA and the University of Wisconsin. In addition to taking and teaching a broad range of neuroscience courses, I have studied Alzheimer's disease, social behavior, vision, and transcriptomic/molecular brain evolution. Ryan is the best!! I had the opportunity to work with Ryan for my advanced Matlab class, which I struggled with. Every session, Ryan went out of his way to ensure I understood the content and the questions each assignment asked. I had always struggled with identifying and fixing minor errors in my code; Ryan would take however much time to help me decipher each issue and help me determine solutions that I understood. He is also extremely personable and makes tutoring a complex topic very enjoyable. I would not have successfully made it through PSYCH 20B without him! Highly, highly recommend!!!
