Many high school and college students come to me feeling like calculus and college math are a collection of random formulas and steps that somehow “work,” but don’t actually make sense. Others earn good grades but still feel like they're following steps rather than truly understanding the mathematics.

If that sounds familiar, it usually means the concepts were never explained in a way that truly clicked for you, and that’s fixable. I don't just teach students how to solve problems; I help them understand why the mathematics works, so formulas stop feeling random and they can solve new problems with confidence.

In our sessions, I don’t just explain and move on. We figure out where your understanding breaks down, then work through the concepts step-by-step until they connect, whether you're learning derivatives, integrals, linear algebra, or differential equations. We’ll usually start with a quick overview, work through a problem together, and then shift toward you taking the lead (with support), so you can build real independence for exams. My goal is that over time, you'll need me less, not more.

I’m a UCLA graduate (Aerospace Engineering & Applied Math) with 900+ hours of tutoring experience on Wyzant since 2020. Beginning Fall 2026, I’ll also be serving as a Mathematics Teaching Assistant at CSULB. I’ve led calculus review sessions at UCLA, earned perfect SAT Math scores (3 times), and received 5s on both AP Calculus AB and BC. Students often continue working with me because they gain confidence, independence, and lasting understanding.

I work with students who feel stuck and need to rebuild their foundation, as well as students who are already doing well but want deeper understanding and stronger intuition. My approach works best for students who are willing to engage and think through problems, not just memorize steps for a single test. If you're serious about building lasting understanding in calculus or college math, I'd love the opportunity to help you succeed.

Approved Subjects

Calculus

Calculus

I've tutored AP Calculus AB/BC and college-level Calculus I, II, III (including multivariable calculus) for over five years, working with both high school and university students in one-on-one settings. Many students come to me feeling like calculus is just a collection of formulas that somehow "work," but don't actually make sense. Others earn good grades yet still feel like they're following procedures rather than truly understanding the mathematics. My approach focuses on identifying where understanding breaks down, connecting ideas across topics like limits, derivatives, and integrals, and helping students see why the mathematics works, beyond knowing how to follow procedures. Whether you're preparing for the AP exam, working through a challenging college course, or rebuilding your foundation, my goal is to help new problems feel approachable instead of intimidating. I scored 5s on both AP Calculus AB and BC, earned A's in all college calculus courses at UCLA, and tailor each session to help students improve grades, prepare for exams, and build lasting confidence through genuine understanding.
Differential Equations

Differential Equations

I've tutored differential equations to college students in one-on-one settings, covering topics such as first- and second-order equations, systems of differential equations, Laplace transforms, and applications. Many students feel overwhelmed not because the algebra is difficult, but because they're unsure which method to use or why one approach works better than another. My approach focuses on recognizing patterns, choosing an appropriate strategy, and working through problems step by step until the process becomes clear and repeatable. Rather than memorizing a long list of techniques, you'll learn how to identify the structure of a problem and confidently decide how to approach it. I specialize in computational and conceptual differential equations, from standard introductory courses through selected upper-division ODE topics. I earned an A in Differential Equations at UCLA, and I tailor each session to help students improve grades, prepare for exams, and understand not only how to solve an equation, but why a particular method works.
Linear Algebra

Linear Algebra

I've tutored first-course linear algebra to college students in one-on-one settings, covering topics such as vector spaces, matrices, eigenvalues, eigenvectors, and linear transformations. Many students become comfortable with computations like row reduction but struggle when the course shifts toward more abstract ideas, making the material feel disconnected and difficult to visualize. My approach focuses on connecting computations to the underlying concepts so the subject feels coherent instead of fragmented. We work through ideas step by step, building intuition alongside the calculations so that concepts like bases, linear transformations, and eigenspaces become meaningful rather than just definitions to memorize. I specialize in introductory, conceptual-computational linear algebra rather than proof-heavy or highly abstract courses. I earned an A in Linear Algebra at UCLA, and I tailor each session to help students improve performance, prepare for exams, and develop a deeper understanding that connects computations with the underlying mathematics.

Transformative

Shin is one of the kindest teachers I know. Due to a plethora of reasons, math was never my strongest subject. I had a lot of math troubles this year as well, but Shin would patiently work out problems step-by-step. It didnt matter how confused I got or how many times I would bump into similar issues -- his voice never rose, staying encouraging. Throughout it all, I always got a feeling that he believed in me. It sounds silly to say, but Shin made math feel comfortable, allowing me to calm down in my work and lock in. Through Shin's teaching, I realized that I wasn't "bad at math." At some point, I had simply become overwhelmed by math, scared of messing up. But one can't improve without practice. And practice means failing, over and over again until you get it right. Shin explained things in a way that clicked with me, using clear visuals and straightforward verbal language that left no room for confusion. Once I had my first 'aha moment,' I began to take down the walls I had built up around math. In his sessions, mistakes weren't met with condescending comments or disappointed eyes. Shin built a space that not only allowed me to mess up, but work through the process myself with him as a guiding hand. As a teacher, Shin never overstepped, preferring to WORK WITH the student instead of TALKING AT them. Through practice, I realized that I enjoyed math. Every time I would make a self-deprecating comment, he would tell me not to speak to myself that way. Over time, I realized that my idea that I was "bad at math" made me admit defeat before even picking up my pencil.

Effective, patient, and passionate

Shin was a wonderful tutor as I navigated Linear Algebra and Differential Equations in fast-paced summer sessions. He is passionate about his teaching practice and sought to relay explanations as clearly as possible without compromising depth. He also made a practice of prompting me with comprehension questions so that he could gauge my understanding and keep the lessons interactive. We spent a lot of time talking about the connections between topics that in class seemed disparate. As a result, I was able to follow the narrative of the courses rather than learning each topic as an independent, rote procedure. I was pleased but not surprised by how much better I performed on my assessments because of Shin's guidance. I feel great about my investment knowing that my retention is strengthened by my deeper conceptual understanding. Shin loves math and wants to make it work for you, regardless of your confidence level or past experience. I highly recommend Shin for undergraduate or graduate students in intermediate and higher-level math courses.

Great explanations, really makes sure you understand the material

Shin helped me go from failing to a B in both Linear Algebra and Differential Equations. He gives very clear explanations, and takes the time after each practice problem to make sure you understand exactly how to apply what you've just learned to other problems/concepts. He is very patient, but doesn't coddle you. I would definitely recommend him as a tutor for both of these subjects!

Phenomenal Tutor

Shin is a tremendous tutor. I have met extremely few individuals with such sharp intellect and remarkable ability to explain concepts. Shin understands that for us students, time is extremely precious, so he prepares his students with utmost precision and ensures that his lessons are as efficient as possible. Shin possesses a truly special aptitude and passion for math. With our lessons, my preparedness and confidence for math tests have skyrocketed. Despite Shin’s incredible talent, what I admire most about him is how he views his students’ successes as his own successes. Shin has gone out of his way to help me on multiple occasions when I faced unexpected obstacles and deadlines. Shin is one of a kind. If you are looking for a math tutor, look no further; you have found the right person for the job.

I Cannot Recommend Shin Enough!

Shin tutored me in AP Calculus BC throughout the school year. I have always struggled with math, and this was definitely one of the more challenging math classes that I have had to take. Shin explained to me the larger concepts that I couldn’t understand and always ensured that I had a complete grasp on the ideas we were reviewing. He was never just showing me how to do examples, and would actually take the time to review the core concepts, which really helped me succeed in class and get an A both semesters. He has a bright and bubbly personality and I always felt comfortable asking questions or getting the answer wrong because of the relaxed environment he cultivated. I cannot recommend Shin enough if you are looking for an amazing, positive math tutor who will really help you have a better understanding of the material!
