About Scott

Frankly, I am not your “traditional” teacher. I prefer to bring real world experience with a “outside the box” approach. As a corporate manager for nearly 12 years, I have managed, trained, and mentored people in all stages and walks of their career. Some still call me today for advice or just a different perspective. I combine business acumen with my degree in English, Creative Writing. Relevant coursework in college included an “A” in “Literature for Adolescents”. I’ve also proofread essays and term papers and reworked people’s resumes from time to time. I can teach reading, interpretation, and writing (essay or creative) to junior high, high school and college students. I can also teach many business skills to college level, entry level, and middle management experienced employees.

Please allow me to explain my approach.

First off, I believe success is achieved in two different stages:

1)Theory - School or training teaches theory. It is the learning portion that includes work in the classroom, homework, and understanding the subject matter. You must understand and interpret what you read or learn.

2)Execution – This is theory in action. It is “doing”. Take what you just learned and apply it into real world situations such as on a test or in your daily career. Sometimes multiple theories are needed to complete real world tasks.

That may sound simple, but in my years of experience as a Manager, I’ve found that many people (even college grads) fail in Execution. They understand the theory, but cannot execute that theory to produce a positive result. Put it this way, you can learn how to cook and learn as many recipes as you want (theory), but you still have to actually turn on the stove and cook (execution). You must master both stages to be successful. That is what I teach. The lack of ability to bridge theory and execution is why I want to teach in the first place.

Furthermore, my approach is tailored specifically to you. It begins with an assessment of where you are currently reading and writing or where you’re at in your career. Everybody is different and struggles in different areas. You may only need a small tweak. You may need a lot of work. Certain lessons may impact you more than others. That is my job to figure out and make the necessary adjustments to help you.

I hope you'll give me the opportunity to help you in your path to success. Thank you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Basketball

I played varsity basketball in HS. I volunteered as a YMCA basketball coach for two seasons for the 10-13 year old category. I'm very active and still play in an adult basketball league.

I can teach a variety of skills from basic fundamentals to advanced strategies.

Business

I have 12 years of business management experience. Four of those years were spent as a corporate manager. The remaining eight were spent managing my own company.

Proofreading

I have proofread many papers (including my own). I can fix syntax, grammar, and help you rearrange the words to make your paper flow. I can also tell you when your paper is going off topic and make suggestions about what should be included or excluded. Basically, I proofread everyday, so I can definitely help you in this arena.

Reading

Reading comprehension is the first stage to being able to write about a subject. You have to understand the concepts that you read at many different levels. I can also teach you how to read quicker with out sacrificing content.

Track & Field

I ran varsity track and field in HS. I lettered in both the 300IH and 110HH. My career topped off at CIF prelims.

I can teach you proper form and technique, how to "3 Step" and how to run a fantastic time in the 300IH.

If you are a hurdler and you want to improve your personal best then I can definitely help you!

Writing

I can help you write essays or write creative or both if you are so inclined! I can help you write under timed circumstances for tests. I've written plenty of term papers in college (and thankfully received a B or better), so I'm sure I can help you write a concise, on topic essay.
