Mr. S. has studied the biology and ecology of reptiles and amphibians (herps - slang) most of his life, and he has focused predominantly on the herps of California. Mr. S. has devoted time not only to studying and understanding our native herps, but also to public outreach, to educate people as to the importance of reptile and amphibian preservation in the wild. While attending California State University (Sacramento), Mr. S. was employed by the CSU University Foundation to feed and care for the reptiles and amphibians in the permanent collection of the Biology Department.

Mr. S. has over 12 years’ professional experience working in the field of wildlife biology and habitat conservation, and significant experience as a biological monitor working on large scale construction projects in California – for such entities as the Sacramento Municipal Utilities District (SMUD), Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E), the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), the East Bay Municipal Utilities District (EBMUD), the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC), and the Contra Costa Water District (CCWD). He has gained recognized experience in preconstruction biological surveys, field surveys for special-status reptiles and amphibians, and for raptor surveys and nest monitoring.

Mr. S. also conducts Rattlesnake Awareness and Safety Training seminars for biologists, construction companies and workers, landowners, and public entities. He has removed and relocated hundreds of rattlesnakes from construction and other work areas. During the SFPUC WSIP projects, he was the only biologist permitted to do so.

He loves math and has tutored math -- at American River College and at CSU Sacramento.
