Hello. My name is Katy, and I like to teach. I just finished 10 years as a 7th Grade Resource Specialist. I loved the staff and the kiddos I worked with, but am ready to slow down and have time for other very important areas of my life that have been neglected. Hello. My name is Katy, and I like to teach. I just finished 10 years as a 7th Grade Resource Specialist. I loved the staff and the kiddos I worked with, but am ready to slow down and have time for other very important areas of my life that have been neglected. Now I still get to help students, but can limit the scale of it all.
I have a valid California Teaching Credential, and I also have current Reading Specialist and Education Specialist Credentials that let me work with kiddos who have learning disabilities. I worked with students according to their individual needs, adjusted lessons according to those needs, and also taught small groups of kiddos with organizational challenges. At the same time, I was working in classrooms that had general educational/non-learning disabled students as well. I worked with all students in English, Social Studies, and Math class. (English/Soc Studies are my specialties, but I can help with math pretty well). I will start with what you are struggling with, but can also work with you on specific skills as well.
One other interesting fact about my teaching history is that I homeschooled all three of my own kids, all the way through high school. Just fyi, my three now-grown children went to public universities and all graduated with honors in their chosen fields. Partly that was because they worked hard, but I would also like to think their teacher had something to do with it as well. I am told that I have an excellent sense of humor, and I am pretty low-key, patient, and understanding. :)

Online or in-person, if local to Livermore, CA. Homeschoolers are welcome, and I prefer to finish by 6:00 pm, M-F.

Approved Subjects

Dyslexia

Dyslexia

I have 10 years experience teaching students with learning disabilities, including Dyslexia. Based on diagnostic testing done by myself and the IEP team, goals and accommodations were implemented to help students equally access the curriculum along with their general education peers. I helped to differentiate the classroom instruction for Dyslexic students with such strategies as providing sentence frames and graphic organizers for writing, shortening assignments, and providing Assistive Technology. I was able to work in smaller groups or one on one as well, in order to give more targeted guidance and help to those who needed it. I have training in Orton-Gillingham procedures for Dyslexia.
Grammar

Grammar

In addition to explicit teaching of grammar rules, all writing projects in language arts class ended in a teacher-led step-by-step follow up, helping students to re-read their own work and catch grammar and punctuation errors before submitting a final draft.
Phonics

Phonics

Lindamood-Bell step-by-step phonetic teaching is used currently in the public schools with students who struggle with phonemic awareness - particularly students with dyslexic-type disabilities. I have purchased my own curriculum to use with my tutoring students.
Reading

Reading

I have a current Reading Specialist Credential, and have used much of that training as a Resource Specialist, differentiating the curriculum for my caseload students in the general education classrooms, and determining IEP accommodations based on their struggles and disabilities.
Writing

Writing

Taught essay-writing in 7th grade, differentiating the lessons based on the needs of the struggling students in the room who needed more explicit teaching, graphic organizers such as sentence frames and models, etc.
