I am a credentialed elementary and secondary teacher with 23 years of experience teaching 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, and 8th grades. I am currently a middle school English and Drama teacher. I have a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies, a California Single Subject Credential in English, a California Multiple Subject Credential, and a Master of Science in Counseling. I use formal and informal assessments to determine the academic needs of each student; then use the results to develop an individualized education plan. Through various strategies and methods, I work one on one with students to develop and foster their educational growth and development, based on their individual learning style. I believe that parent-teacher-tutor communication is essential if tutoring is to be successful. Together we can ensure that your struggling student is given the best possible chance to overcome academic obstacles and be successful in school, and beyond. My focus has been on primary reading, writing, and math, but I can teach and tutor students in grades K-6 in all subject areas, and grade 7-12 students in English. I am available this summer to get your child caught up for next school year, or to help them get ahead!

Elementary (K-6th)

I have 11 years experience in grades 1st, 2nd,3rd, and 6th, teaching Reading, Writing, Spelling, Language Development, Math, Social Studies, Science, and P.E. in Madera, California, from July 2000 to October 2011. I have a B.A. in Liberal Studies from CSU, Fresno, May 1999 and my credential program completed in Jan 2000, at CSU, Fresno.
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

I have taught elementary math for over 10 years to students in grades 1-6, and hold credentials to teach up through grade 6. My students learn math skills by using manipulatives to build their skill development, and understanding of math concepts. Students need a solid foundation in math concepts in order to understand the more complex concepts taught in 4th grade and above. I work with struggling students by first finding out the gaps in their learning, and then working to fill those gaps. Each student has a different learning style and teaching is most effective when teachers have the ability to tailor their teaching style to fit that student. That is what successful tutoring is all about!
English

English

As a teacher and a graduate student, I have over 11 years of teaching English, including writing, reading, and speaking. Depending on the individual needs of the student, tutoring is available for beginning through college level students.
ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

Teaching English as a second language consists of reading, writing, speaking, and listening. I have ten years teaching English language learners in a classroom setting and find that the best way for students to learn English is to practice, practice, and practice! That practice includes speaking, listening, reading, and writing he language. On average it takes second language learners 7 years to become fluent in another language. This being said, students need to learn the correct grammar and usage of the language to become proficient in the writing and speaking of it. I work with student on these components by integrating the reading and listening into the speaking and writing, to ensure the student will become proficient in all four areas.
Phonics

Phonics

Teacher of beginning and early reading students in grades 1-3, includes instruction in Phonics, decoding, fluency, and comprehension. 5 years teaching first grade reading, 5 years teaching second grade reading. 8 years teaching third grade reading, California Multiple Subject Credential. Single subject credential in English (pending).
Reading

Reading

Reading is one of my favorite subjects to teach! The joy of seeing smiling faces when they learn to read is inspiring and motivating to me as a teacher. My goal is always to get students up to grade-level, and beyond in their reading skills and I have been most successful at this by working one-on-one with students. Depending on the child's reading level, I will work with them on improving their reading skills and comprehension using various teaching strategies.
Writing

Writing

Writing is best learned by practicing and reading various genres. I teach students the various components of effective writing, including; sentence structure, paragraph development, writing mechanics and word usage, English writing conventions, the writing process, clarity and coherence, using effective details, and how to write for different purposes. As a master's degree graduate I have 3 years experience writing at the graduate school level, as well as 11 years teaching writing in elementary school.

Relieved and amazed

This was the first lesson with our second grade grandson who can be challenging with his ADHD, especially at the end of the day and with the prospect of one hour of studying/homework. With Melanie's kind guidance, he stayed on track and is looking forward to next week!

Thank you Sharon! It was a pleasure working with him and I look forward to doing it again next week!

Great teacher.

Melanie has really helped my son with his confidence in reading. He is taking his time to read and focus on what he is doing. For a 10 year old boy who hates homework he really enjoys his time with her.
