Tenured professor. I am currently in my 20th year of teaching. I began my writing career at 18, covering county events for a daily newspaper. I also began a column, and in 2003 won "Best Weekly Column" for a publication under 20,000 in the California Newspaper Publisher's Association.
At UC Davis, I studied Shakespearean drama, graduating with highest honors. I earned my Master's in English at UC Irvine, continuing study in what is sometimes referred to as the Early Modern era (e.g., Shakespeare, Spenser, Milton). I completed several years of post-graduate study by taking (and subsequently teaching) courses in rhetoric and composition at UCI.
I was hired as a full-time lecturer at UC Irvine as well as a full-time lecturer at CSU Long Beach. At the latter institution, I was one of two faculty members who developed a new undergraduate writing course for criminology majors (still in use today!) We eventually co-authored the curriculum for a supplemental capstone writing course as well. I also taught part time at area community colleges in Orange County, CA.
In 2013 I began working full-time as a writing specialist at the Center for Excellent in Writing and Communication at UC Irvine. (I still continued to teach at area community colleges). There, I tutored UCI students in all subjects for the next three years, while also developing writing workshops for undergraduates to attend on a weekly basis. During the summers, I worked with students one-on-one who were pursuing prestigious scholarships (e.g., Fulbright, Gates Cambridge, Rhodes, etc.)
In 2016, I was hired back in Northern California. I serve as our college's vice president of the academic senate and teach college writing, research, creative writing, literature, and more. I was also the first subcommittee chair for our college's Dual Enrollment subcommittee; I enjoy working with dual enrolled students as they discover their own writing voices and talents.
I live with my wife, 3 dogs, and toddler daughter.

Essay Writing

Essay Writing

Served as a Writing Specialist for three years at UC Irvine, where I tutored students one on one on their essays for any undergraduate course offered at the college. I have also served as a writing tutor for two years at Irvine Valley College, focusing primarily on essay writing. Additionally, I have taught writing composition (of various levels) for 20+ years at California community colleges, CSUs, and UCs, where our primary focus has been essay writing (in fact, they are the primary assignments for all classes I teach).
Interview Prep

Interview Prep

For three years (2013-2016) I served as a full-time specialist at UC Irvine's Center for Excellence in Writing & Communication where one of the regular tasks I helped undergraduate students with was for interview prep for jobs, academic programs, scholarships, internships, and more. During the summers the interview prep was expanded extensively, as I worked with those applying to prestigious scholarships (Rhodes, Fulbright, etc), as well as new and continuing employment. Additionally, in my 8 years as a journalist for a daily newspaper I interviewed countless individuals. Though not the same as a job-searching interview process, there are many overlaps in the skillsets required.
Thesis Writing

Thesis Writing

Served as a Writing Specialist for three years at UC Irvine, where I tutored students one on one on their essays for any undergraduate course offered at the college. I have also served as a writing tutor for two years at Irvine Valley College, focusing primarily on essay writing. The essays I primarily assign and/or review are thesis-centered and controlled, from research essays to pro/con essays, etc. Additionally, I have taught writing composition (of various levels) for 20+ years at California community colleges, CSUs, and UCs, where our primary focus has been essay writing (in fact, they are the primary assignments for all classes I teach) -- essay writing that is centered on an argument-driven thesis statement.
