I have seven years of private tutoring experience and have worked with a variety of students and subjects, ranging from early elementary (general education subjects) through college math. My experience includes working with special needs children as well, including those who have been diagnosed with ADD, ADHD, retardation, and dyslexia. I have taken classes at the local community college for early childhood education and have been homeschooling my 10-year-old son for the past five years. My most proficient subject is math (I can tutor through College Algebra in math), but I am knowledgeable in English, (phonics, reading and grammar), science, Spanish, and history as well.
When tutoring, I like to use worksheets, games, coloring sheets, books, verbal explanation, hands-on learning (manipulatives), encouragement and more. It all depends on the subject and age level that I’m tutoring. I try to curve my tutoring towards the learning style and need of the student. I find that tutoring not only gives those students the one-on-one help that they need, but also gives me a reward as tutor to see my students “get it.”

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
