About Jim

Bio

I taught language arts and literature to junior high and high school students in public and private schools for twenty years. I have a passion for these subjects and for making them accessible and meaningful to my students. I love these subjects because they help us to think, feel, and express ourselves more deeply and effectively. They help us to communicate and empathize with others. They help us to process our own experiences and spend some time in the other person’s shoes.

I am a storyteller by nature. I hold a bachelor of arts degree in cinema-television production from the University of Southern California. I have several years of master’s level study in screenwriting and story analysis with a graduate of UCLA’s MFA screenwriting program. I have written numerous essays, poems, screenplays, and songs.

If you or your child need help or just want to explore and expand your horizons, I would love to guide you along that wonderfully rewarding journey!

American History

American History

I am passionate about American history, and I love finding ways to bring history alive and make it understandable and relevant to my students. This is more important now than ever. I have a way of being able to take what seem like distant events and figures and frame them in contemporary terms and situations. This allows modern students to relate to these historical events and figures so they (the students) may understand why and how they (the historical events and figures) matter.
English

English

I love English, and I love language! I taught English in the classroom for nearly twenty years. I understand this subject in ways that allow me to make it understandable to my students. Ever since I was in junior high school I have shown an affinity for this subject--from the most technical rules of grammar to the freedom of expression to be found in creative writing.
Film

Film

I graduated from USC's School of Cinema-Television with a major in film and television production. I have produced several of my own short film projects. I have worked on several professional music video productions. I have done extensive study in film criticism (critical studies), film appreciation, screenwriting, and story analysis. I have written several screenplays.
Grammar

Grammar

I taught grammar quite successfully in the classroom for nearly twenty years. I have developed many ways to make this subject clear and understandable to students. As an avid lover of the English language and an experienced writer, I can show students everything from perfectly proper grammar to when it is OK (or even good) to break the rules!
Literature

Literature

Literature is my favorite thing to teach, and I am proud that I was very successful in showing my students that reading literature can be a most powerful and rewarding experience. My many years of studying literature and storytelling, along with my own love of writing, allow me to give students insights into literature that most other teachers simply cannot do. Learning to read and appreciate literature enriches our souls and helps us to learn about life, others, and ourselves in ways we might never get to do otherwise.
Writing

Writing

Writing is one of my greatest passions! I have taught writing of all sorts--from basic sentence and paragraph structure to essays and research papers to multiple forms of creative writing--for over twenty years. I have worked with high school students to improve their essay writing skills for the SAT, and I have helped them write successful essays and personal statements for their college applications. I am an active and avid writer of essays, poems, screenplays, and songs.

Great teacher

Mr. Jim and I had very good conversation this afternoon. We discussed story structure and my experience so far with writing. I appreciate his teaching, advice, and his willingness to explain and break down stuff for me. He was very nice to meet and I look forward to discuss more with him in the future.

Excellent tutor!

My son's grades improved with Jim's help! He was very patient, easy to understand, and flexible when extra time was needed to prepare for test. We really appreciate Jim and would recommend him to anyone seeking a great tutor for government and math. Cheers!
