Hi, I'm Jake! I'm excited to help you or your student learn to love learning! I graduated Magna Cum Laude from Biola University specializing in Bible, Theology, and Ministry with an emphasis in Biblical Languages. Or in other words, I am a big nerd for learning, specifically focusing on the humanities and languages. I previously taught 8th grade English and 6th grade History. My goal in interacting with students was the same then as it is now—encourage and build confidence! If a student believes in themselves and works hard, they will improve—every time. Grades tell a story, but they do not tell the whole story. I want to help your student see every amount of improvement as a success and every test or quiz as an opportunity rather than an obstacle on their journey to academic and professional success.
Throughout school I hated English more than any other class. Grammar and vocabulary constantly vexed my soul as I tried to memorize strange patterns and rules only to find a hundred other examples that broke the rules. It all seemed so meaningless, until I finally learned that I was gifted at argumentation and discourse. It was at this moment that learning came alive for me. This revelation changed my entire outlook on the humanities. Instead of fighting to prove myself through a grade, I was excitedly discovering tools to help me succeed in life. Reading suddenly transformed from being a chore into a doorway into someone else's mind.
I hope to ignite a passion for learning in your students in whatever subject they are challenged by, because if they learn to overcome their challenges in school, they will be unstoppable in college, in the workplace, and in life at large!
