I am a graduate of Temple University in Philadelphia, PA where I completed a Master of Arts in criminal justice. Before grad school I completed Bachelor of Arts degrees in criminology, law and society, and psychology and social behavior from UC Irvine, where I graduated cum laude.

I was a teaching assistant during graduate school, where I worked with undergraduate students in criminal justice classes. As a TA, I read and reviewed students' papers, graded their assignments, liaised between students and the professors, and worked one-on-one with students on brainstorming and organizing their term papers. Most of the students in these classes were of traditional college age (18-22), although some were older students; many were transfer students as well.

Since then, I have been working one-on-one with students from 4th grade to college, on topics including vocabulary and spelling, short answer and essay prompts, study skills and organization, and book reports and poster projects.

My philosophy is that there is no "one size fits all" approach to learning, and that it is important to meet each individual where he or she is at. I love to facilitate a more efficient way for students to reach their learning goals, and I believe that learning for the sake of learning will always be easier and more pleasant than learning to pass a test. If something isn't working, my goal is to keep trying different approaches until we find a strategy that works. If students have specific materials that they need help with, I am happy to work from those; otherwise, I can create targeted plans to address a student's specific needs. I love what I do, and your student's success is my priority.

I would love to hear from you! Please contact me with any questions or to schedule a lesson. If your schedule changes before a lesson, please email me at least 24 hours before the scheduled lesson would have happened.

Great and compassionate tutor

Amélia edited my essays and greatly improved it in every way. As a high school student, I did not have a lot of money but she compassionately helped me. I recommend her services. Thanks Amelia for your wonderful edits.

Weekly review for Amelia

Good! She went to full help for Wesley from homework support to additional reading support. She did a great job. Maybe in the future, we will consider adding writing support. Thanks!

Great and knowledgeable teacher

Amelia did a great to help my son with writing. My son is 9 and is a right brain learner with ADHD. She really knows how to get him to write. Normally when he has to write his mind goes blank and he can't think of anything to write. I would recommend her to other parents.

Just what we needed

English tutors were not working for my college student who gets stuck at times in English causing him to have failed 2 classes. He has a processing learning disability and ADHD. We decided to try something different, so instead of English major tutors we went with Amelia. We also decided on an online faster passed summer class. So far it seems to be a success. Amelia listens to my input! Just wanted my son to pass - now an A might be possible.
