About Tina

I may be new to Wyzant but not new to teaching.

Raised in China and educated in both China and the U.S., I am passionate about teaching Chinese language, culture, and history to American students. I hold a bachelor's degree in literature from Sichuan University, China, a Master's degree in education with Nova Southeastern University in the U.S., as well as, a clear teaching credential from the State of California. I have been working as a substitute teacher for years and have successfully homeschooled both of my children. I am fluent in Chinese, Japanese, and English. I have been teaching Chinese to non-native speakers for more than 12 years, from pre-schoolers to college students. I taught in the Chinese school of CBCCOC in Irvine for a few years; I also tutored students privately including my own America-born children who have become fluent in listening, speaking, reading, and writing the Chinese language. Both of my sons memorized the timetable in Chinese! My younger son (10 years old) is exceptional, who can recite Chinese poems and write journals and stories in Chinese!

I train students of all ages and levels from kindergarten to college, from beginners to advanced level, as well as, preparation for Chinese SATII and AP Chinese exams. Every student is unique, so I utilize different techniques and methods in my teaching based on his/her interest, learning style, and practical needs. In general, my teaching is focused on listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. I design each lesson for my students according to individual needs.

I am a big fan in sharing Chinese culture, custom, history, geography, politics, etc. All my students will be influenced in these areas throughout their lessons. If you are going to travel or do business in China and need a crash course in Chinese, I’m here to help too! Chinese is not an easy language to learn, but I will make it “easy” and fun for you. I encourage all my students to work hard work smart. I am caring, patient, knowledgeable, and am willing to help students who are eager to learn. I also hold a BA degree in Japanese literature. I read, speak, and write fluently in Japanese as well. I have taught my own children Japanese and have been successful. I am ready to tutor students who wish to explore or learn this beautiful language and culture.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Algebra is my specialty. I have been tutoring Algebra I for 5 plus years, including homeschooling my own children who both became very strong in math.

Chinese

I was raised and educated in China with a bachelor's degree from the prestigious Sichuan University. I also hold a Master's degree in education with Nova Southeastern University from the U.S. In addition, I have a clear teaching credential from the State of California and have been working as a substitute teacher for years. Also, I have home schooled both of my children until the end of middle school. I am fluent in Chinese, Japanese, and English (I have been living in the United States for more than twenty-eight years).

I enjoyed teaching Chinese at the Chinese school of our Church in Irvine for a few years. I have also tutored students privately including my own America born children who have become fluent in speaking, reading, and writing the Chinese language. I tutor all level from elementary to college students, including preparation for AP Chinese.

Common Core

Ever since common core was introduced to our school district, I have implemented this teaching method into our daily activities to my home-schooled children. During last summer vacation, I had an opportunity teaching my 5th-grade son Redbird math, a common core math program designed by Standford University and was very successful.

Elementary (K-6th)

I hold a clear teaching credential (multiple subjects) from the State of California. I have been teaching as a substitute teacher and a home-school teacher for the last 12 years. In addition, I earned a BA degree in literature from Sichuan University, China, and a Master's degree in education with Nova Southeastern University in the U.S.

I have been working as a substitute and home-school teacher for 12 years. I am also a private tutor in Math, ESL, TOFEL, and Chinese/Japanese language. I have taught in classroom setting, small group setting, as well as, one-on-one tutoring.

Elementary Math

During the past 8 years of tutoring math (elementary and middle school) I have taught math in a unique way different from what's been taught in a traditional classroom. I show them there are more than one way to skin a cat. Typically, I have my students try at least two or three ways in resolving a same problem and help them pick one method they find works best for them. It's been rewarding. In addition to a Master's degree in education, I have a clear teaching credential from the State of California. I have been teaching as a substitute teacher, a private tutor, as well as, a homeschool educator for many years.

ESL/ESOL

I hold a Master's degree in education with Nova Southeastern University, as well as, a clear teaching credential from the State of California. I have been working as a substitute teacher for many years and have successfully homeschooled both of my children.

Homeschool

I have a California cleared teaching credential and have been homeschooled my two sons from 2nd grade through 8th grade. Both of my children have excelled in all subjects under my homeschool guidance. My older son is in honor class in his high school and is an accomplished pianist. My younger son is also far ahead of same aged students.

Japanese

I hold a bachelor's degree in Japanese literature from Sichuan University, China, a Master's degree in education with Nova Southeastern University in the U.S., as well as a clear teaching credential from the State of California. I am fluent in Japanese and English. I have been teaching Japanese to non-native speakers for many years, from elementary to college students.

Prealgebra

I hold a Master's degree in education. In addition, I have a clear teaching credential from the State of California and have been working as a substitute teacher for years. Also, I have home schooled both of my children until the end of middle school.
