Em R. is a Boston and Southern California-based composer, multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter, educator, and electronic musician. She completed her Master of Music in Composition, as well as her Undergraduate Diploma in Composition (as a Presidential Scholar), at the Longy School of Music of Bard College.

In private studio lessons, Em has taught flute, music theory, composition, and music history to students (from grade school to college). She offers lessons to all levels of experience, and strives to meet each student's needs and works with their current musical knowledge. She believes that music theory, music history, and composition are invaluable assets for all students, and not only helps their understanding of music, but inspires further education.

As a classroom teacher, she has instructed music theory and woodwind students, aged 13-17, throughout the school year and during summer band camps. The curriculum used includes general sound warm-ups, technical exercises, general music theory and ear-training. Her students have gone on to prestigious colleges such as Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of California Irvine, and New York University.

She has played several instruments for most of her life, including flute, guitar, mandolin, and cello; yet piano became her home while in college studying composition. As a composer, she draws on earth science, visual art, and emotion to create genre-blended works that combine classical and romantic music with folk, rock, pop, and electronic elements.

Em's aim as a teacher is to inspire love for expression through music, and encourage each student to continue with music in some capacity throughout their life.

Composition (Music)

Composition (Music)

I completed master's and undergraduate degrees in composition from a music conservatory. I have composed works for individuals and ensembles of various instrumentations, including instrumental music, vocal music, and electronic music. I have experience playing several instruments, as well as recording and producing music in several software programs. Stylistically, I combine romantic-classical music with several other musical styles, including folk, rock, pop, and electronic elements.
Flute

Flute

I have been playing flute for 18 years, having played in every music class in elementary school through high school (Band/Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band, Marching Band, and Orchestra Pit). I started taking private lessons at age 12 and continued studying flute privately well into college, and I am familiar with solo and orchestral repertoire. I have performed in music venues across the U.S., including Carnegie Hall as a featured soloist.
Music History

Music History

I attended a music conservatory that required 4 semesters of music history classes, covering early music, baroque music, classical music, romantic music, and contemporary music. After fulfilling those requirements, I took countless other classes that provided an in-depth examination of more specific composers and musical styles throughout different time periods. My years of experience studying music history gave me a passionate belief that music history education allows for further musical understanding and appreciation.
Music Theory

Music Theory

I completed Master's and Undergraduate degrees in Composition from a music conservatory, involving extensive and rigorous training in music theory (ear training, sight singing, melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic dictation, harmony, form and analysis, orchestration, written and aural analysis, and counterpoint). Prior to college training, I took AP Music Theory in high school, and remain familiar with the knowledge and skills required to succeed in the class and on the AP exam.
Songwriting

Songwriting

I have a Master's in Composition, with a background as a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. My 6 years studying music composition allowed me to experiment writing for voice, working with text, and combining my knowledge of songwriting with my experience of music composition. Songwriting comes naturally for some, but it is a craft that can be honed through trying different ideas and techniques, as well as studying and analyzing different songs of any and all styles.

Great

Em is an excellent communicator. She is friendly, understanding, and easy to talk with. I felt very comfortable asking questions. She has gone through the education and work for a degree in music and knew how to explain aspects of theory with clarity - modes, scales, the history of music. Excellent tutor
