About James

Internalization.

It's why you're here. The hope is not that I can just help you do your homework; the hope is that when I leave you understand it yourself. You will not believe how well you will understand the subject after we are done, and we'll have fun doing it.

I have studied Ancient Greek and Hebrew, some Latin and Spanish, and the culture and history of their discourse authors. I was the Education Director for the Boys and Girls Club and worked for DUKE in their (TIP) Talent Identification Program. I also work part time locally for a private school. I hold an MDIV from APU and a BA in Bible with an emphasis in Bible languages from LIFE Pacific College.

I worked for Capitol One and Boeing. I worked as a translating assistant for an executive interview at RIOT Games of Mark Merrill and Brandon Beck for SET cable of China, and as a transcriber for VOGUE magazine.

About Me:

Tutoring is more than being able to find answers yourself; A tutor is the bridge between you and the learning your teacher was trying to give you. I am a good tutor, not because I know every answer; I am a good tutor because I love to see you get it. It's what causes me to keep on learning.

I live by the creed that if you understand something you can explain it, and if you can't explain it, you don't understand it. I will be quick to tell you when I do not understand something. And then we will look it up and learn it together.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Basketball

I played basketball in college for 2 years and coached middle school girls basketball in Claremont.

Bible Studies

I have a BA in Biblical Studies and a MA in Divinity from Azusa Pacific University. I can read the text in Greek and Hebrew as well as discuss any theological bible questions ad nauseam. I have tutored in this subject for 16 plus years as well as worked as a pastor and small group leader. I can teach on interpretation (hermeneutics, exegesis), multicultural evangelism, honor and shame, history, setting, pericopes, genres, chiasms, antithetical and synthetic parallelism, merisms, and the beliefs of the Ancient Near Eastern cultures. There is much more to this area of study than people are aware. If any other specifics are needed, please ask.

Film

I took 4 years of acting for television from Renee' Raudman. The class used Roy Londons style of method acting. I have done interpretive work on over a thousand films and read multiple books on interpretive style and creation.

I have created and edited over 50 products and worked alongside BIOLA's Film chair.

Public Speaking

I have taken 4 years of Film Study acting lessons and performed in front of 500+ people multiple times. I have professionally spoken to groups of 50+ in classrooms and I led a small group of 24 people for 2 years.

Reading

If you come to me for nothing else, come for critical reading skills. I have spent the last 13 years studying extensively and debating publicly what can be implied from written text. Not just the letter but the spirit. If you want to be an accurate interpreter of information both written and oral, come to me. Not to mention I got a perfect score on their reading test.

Religion

I have a Master's degree in Divinity. My degree includes over 90 masters units in Ancient Near Eastern cultures and worship, Third World theologies, occult practices, divination, Buddhism, Taoism, and Zoroastrianism.

My area of interest and specialty is biblical theology. See my bible section for specifics.

SAT Reading

Learn to classify!

A penguin melted a snowman with a blow torch.

Your subject (penguin) melted (verb) a snowman (direct object/accusative) with (preposition) a blow torch (means).

This is an action/means sentence. An action is set in motion followed by how that action was accomplished; the "means," or "way" it was done. Very simple right? So how does it get so complicated?

Because we are not trained to look at sentences this way, we lose sight of the focus, the main point, and we wander looking for which way to interpret.

By practicing classifying sentences using simple subjects and verbs (penguins and blowtorches), students find a friendly path into subconsciously labeling parts of the sentence. By sheer repetition it becomes second nature to break apart a sentence and understand it. Students quickly forget they are even doing it.

So many students focus on route memorization of vocabulary in hopes of improving their score, and this will help you; but a perfect vocabulary is not going to help you pass the critical reading section. Many times it is the context and direction of the sentence that decides the meaning.

Spend a little time learning to break down the sentence and I promise these critical reading sections will be the easiest part of the SAT for you.

Tennis

I played tennis in high school competitively at a Quad A school and placed 5th at Districts. I taught for the City of Yakima, both children and adult classes.

Very engaging and creative! — We have been seeing James for a few weeks now and we have been very impressed with his teaching style and communication. He spent time getting to know my daughter and has been assisting her to better comprehend and interpret ideas and concepts that she has been struggling with. He checks in with me as well to make sure that he is addressing any academic concerns I have for her that she may not hav ...
