Math is fun! I thoroughly enjoy working with students and providing help in courses such as algebra 1, algebra 2, geometry, and precalculus. My goals are to help students understand the topics at hand and help them to apply what they have learned independently.

Math is fun! I thoroughly enjoy working with students and providing help in courses such as algebra 1, algebra 2, geometry, and precalculus. My goals are to help students understand the topics at hand and help them to apply what they have learned independently.

As far as tutoring is concerned, I have worked a total of eight years as a tutor with Sylvan Learning Centers in San Diego, CA and Alexandria, VA. At both locations I helped students at elementary, middle school, and high school levels. My main focuses are high school and college levels of mathematics in the courses of interest as noted above. I also have five years of experience working as a staff tutor in the tutoring center at the community college level in San Diego. While working as a microbiologist, I also took great interest in volunteering as a math tutor at a local high school in San Diego. I enjoyed volunteering three times a week and occasional weekends. I LOVED working with the young people and continued this effort for twenty-two years! When it was discovered that I had intended to retire from my senior microbiologist position, the senior counselor at the high school "dangled the carrot" in my mind about becoming a high school math teacher as a new career. I investigated the possibility and the rest, as they say, is history! I have now been working as a high school math teacher for the past eighteen years and I just love it! The profession doesn't pay as well as the sciences (hehe), but the intangibles from teaching our high school students are quite rewarding. I've NEVER regretted this second career I've chosen.

My tutoring approach is to help my students understand, appreciate, acknowledge, and use confidently the math skills learned both in and out of the classroom. Helping students recognize the "fun" in mathematics may be a stretch, but sometimes it actually happens! When the comfortableness of learning and the confidence of executing correct mathematical answers occur, a degree of joy and fun can take hold. It is

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

My experience includes 22 years as a volunteer high school math tutor; eight years as a Sylvan Learning Center tutor; five years as a staff tutor at the community college level; and 19 years as a current high school math teacher. Plus, I LOVE helping our students!
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

In my, so far, nineteen years of teaching mathematics, I have been teaching algebra 2 for more than 80% of my career. Since I have also been teaching precalculus for several years, the content of algebra 2 is a stepping stone or prerequisite for precalculus and it is material of which I am familiar. I can teach the content of algebra 2 as well as prepare you for precalculus.
CBEST

CBEST

As an active high school teacher, passing the CBEST was a requirement for starting my career. I am familiar with its content and feel I can be of assistance in providing guidance, direction, and support in preparing for the exam. I had several successful opportunities as an eight-year Sylvan Learning Center tutor to help students pass the test. Hopefully, with a little bit of guidance you, too, can be successful. I am pleased to assist!
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

I have had the pleasure of helping elementary students with math while employed with the Sylvan Learning Centers in San Diego and Palm Desert. My years of experience with Sylvan total six. I love helping students of all ages at all levels of math from the elementary grades through college. It is always a joy to see and experience the confidence of students as they succeed in math!
Geometry

Geometry

Geometry is one of those courses which seems to be "backwards" from say, an algebra class. Algebra ASKS one to find the answer for an unknown whereas a proof in geometry will PROVIDE the desired answer, but then ask for the "logic" involved in getting to the desired solution. It is my goal to help you cut through the mystique of proofs and arrive at relevant and logical conclusions. I am an active high school math teacher with 19 wonderful years of experience with our students. I have years of teaching experience with respect to geometry and I am happy to assist with the course content.
Precalculus

Precalculus

Precalculus is typically the next course after algebra 2 and is preparation for a course in calculus, as the course title implies. I have several years of experience in teaching precalculus and it is one of my favorite courses! I have been teaching mathematics for 18 years and precalculus is one of those courses I have had the pleasure of teaching for most of my career. I am motivated to help one get over the hurdles of the course content and reach a level of satisfactory understanding, competency, and application of the course material.
