Hello! My name is Ian, I'm currently a graduate student at San Diego State. My research focuses on arachnid evolution but the classes I teach are more general biology. I graduated from Brigham Young University with a Bachelor's degree in Biodiversity and Conservation. I have several years of experience teaching biology through museum outreach. I also have volunteer tutoring experience with Seeds of Literacy in Ohio where I grew up. I've studied Spanish for several years. No puedo charlar como un nativo pero si tengo la capacidad de comunicar en español.

I know the difference a good teacher can make, and I do my best to help students really understand a topic. I am willing to take time to thoroughly explain, work through practice problems, and review and summarize with each student. I am a firm believer that anyone can succeed in school if they have the right resources and systems and if they have a drive to learn.

I see my role as a tutor as providing those supporting systems but also helping students grow confidence in their own abilities and enjoying the learning process. I have the most experience with science and biology but I am able to help with basic concepts in Spanish, math and reading as well.

Approved Subjects

ACT Science

ACT Science

I received an overall ACT score of 34 and a 36 on the science section. I’m familiar with the type of questions asked and the optimal test taking strategies.
Astronomy

Astronomy

I have read a number of books on astronomy and cosmology including A Briefer History of Time by Stephen Hawking and Coming of Age in the Milky Way and The Red Limit by Timothy Ferris. I've taken two undergradaute courses relating to astronomy, Planetary Geology and Descriptive Astronomy. I enjoy learning about stars and space missions, and like to look for constellations and planets on clear nights.
Biology

Biology

I have a bachelor's degree in Biodiversity and Conservation from BYU. I am a graduate student in an evolutionary biology lab and my research focuses on spider evolution. I have taught biology lab courses, led field trips, and presented on biology concepts at a life science museum. I believe that everyone needs to understand the value of living things, and part of that is learning the processes that underlie the wonderful biodiversity covering our planet.
Spanish

Spanish

I studied Spanish in high school and college. I also learned Spanish through daily study and use as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I spent over a year in Colorado trying to share inspirational messages and teach English to Spanish speakers there. I have practiced Spanish daily for years and used it in the United States, Mexico, and Ecuador.
Zoology

Zoology

I have a Bachelor of Science in Biodiversity and Conservation from Brigham Young University. I have taken courses in zoology, marine biology, entomology, and ornithology. I conducted research in Ecuador and Vietnam on study abroad. I have taught zoology and organismal biology courses at BYU and at SDSU, and taught visitors at Biodiversity museum events at both universities. I have presented original research at scientific conferences in the US and Mexico. I am a co-author on a published journal article in Marine Biology. My master’s thesis project on spider evolution was accepted, and I plan to defend my thesis at SDSU in less than 1 year. I have years of experience finding and identifying animals in the field and teaching students and the public about biodiversity.
