I understand the challenge that mathematics can bring to anyone. I want to tell you my story and how it changed my life. When I was younger, I struggled deeply with mathematics and school in general. No one believed that I would ever be capable of doing great things with my life and I was placed in a series of remedial math classes up until high school. I felt deeply hurt with my struggles in education and made a conscious effort to change and be successful. It was through my determination and the help of others, in particular the help of great teachers and tutors that I was able to breach the barrier and achieve success in math.
I want to extend the gifts I was given to you. What I can offer you is nearly 10 years of mathematics experience ranging from subjects such as basic math all the way up to the graduate-level mathematics that pushes the boundary of our understanding of the world. I can offer you hands-on and patient tutoring that will help you grow as a student, and I can offer you the expert knowledge that comes with being at top of my field.
I follow a pedagogy that was developed at San Diego State University. In mathematics you are often asked by your teachers to respond to a series of "what" questions. What I mean by this is that your teachers often ask you, "what is the answer to this question?" I want to challenge that approach. I want you to tell me why the answer in a problem is true. My goal is to help guide you to that way of thinking in mathematics.
With regards to my qualifications, I am currently pursuing a master's degree in pure mathematics at San Diego State University where my research focuses on an area of Abstract Algebra and Combinatorics called the consecutive pattern poset. I have also completed a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics and History and Augustana University in Sioux Falls, South Dakota where I was near the top of my class. I currently teach precalculus and calculus III at San Diego State University. I have been tutoring and teaching my students for the past 2 years.
