Hi there!

Hi there!

My name is Samuel, and I'm a student at UC San Diego studying Political Science and Economics. I tutor debate, public speaking, and creative writing. I've spent years competing in all three and coaching others in them.

As a competitor, I was ranked the #1 individual speaker across Asia and Oceania at the Asia Pacific Debate Championships. I also won the 18U Impromptu Speaking title at the Australasian Public Speaking Championships, and I was named my high school debate team's Most Valuable Player five times. Just as important, I've been a coach: I've coached over 300 rounds of Asian and British Parliamentary debate, and I partnered with three Korean high schools to grow their public speaking programs. On the writing side, I edited my school newspaper for four years. I've also published poetry with Duke University School of Medicine and Eclipse Literary Magazine.

My approach is simple: students improve fastest by practicing and then getting specific, honest feedback. In a debate session, we'll give short practice speeches, break down what worked, and drill one skill at a time. That might be structuring an argument, rebutting on the spot, or speaking with confidence. For creative writing, we'll read strong examples, draft together, and revise until your own voice comes through. I adapt each session to the student, whether they're a beginner who's nervous to speak up or an experienced competitor preparing for tournaments. I'm fluent in both Korean and English, so I'm happy to work with bilingual families too.

I'd love to help you find your voice. Send me a message and let's get started!

Approved Subjects

ACT English

ACT English

I am currently in one of the top 20 colleges globally with a top ACT score. I have a 1520 SAT as well.
Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I completed IB Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches at the Higher Level, the most rigorous math course in the IB Diploma, which builds on algebra through functions, sequences, and calculus. I was named a National Merit Commended Scholar, and I am now pursuing a B.S. in Economics at UC San Diego, a major grounded in quantitative reasoning. I help students master core Algebra 1 skills such as solving equations and inequalities, graphing linear functions, working with exponents, and setting up word problems. My focus is on explaining why each step works, so students can solve new problems on their own rather than memorizing procedures.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

IB Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches HL covers the full Algebra 2 curriculum in depth, including polynomial and rational functions, exponentials and logarithms, complex numbers, and sequences and series, all of which I completed as part of the IB Diploma. Because HL continues into calculus, I understand how each Algebra 2 topic sets up the next level, which helps me explain the purpose behind the rules instead of just the rules themselves. I am now pursuing a B.S. in Economics at UC San Diego and was named a National Merit Commended Scholar. I help students build fluency with the topics that trip people up most, like log properties, complex conjugates, and translating word problems into systems of equations.
Public Speaking

Public Speaking

I'm the Impromptu Speaking Champion (18U) at the Australasian Public Speaking Championships and the #1-ranked individual speaker across Asia and Oceania at the Asia Pacific Debate Championships, with five years as captain of my school's forensics team and five-time MVP honors for highest speaker points and most debates completed. Beyond competing, I've coached and mentored over 300 students through more than 1,500 rounds of Asian Parliamentary and British Parliamentary debate, and partnered with three local high schools to build public speaking programs from the ground up. I focus on the fundamentals that transfer across any speaking context: structuring a clear argument on the fly, controlling delivery and pacing under pressure, and building genuine confidence in front of an audience.
Writing

Writing

I am a published writer whose poetry has appeared in Duke University's VOICES journal and Eclipse Literary Magazine, and whose research paper was published in the Journal of Student Research. For four years I served as editor of my high school newspaper, where I edited student articles for clarity, structure, and grammar. I completed the IB Diploma with English A HL and earned writing recognition from The New York Times and the John Locke Essay Competition. Now studying Political Science and Economics at UC San Diego, I help students with thesis development, essay organization, narrative craft, and line-level editing.
