Hi! I'm Charlotte, a Bioengineering PhD student at the University of San Diego and an NSF GFRP Fellow. My research focuses on genetic engineering and its applications to developing new disease therapeutics. I hold a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering from Duke University, where I also minored in Computational Biology and Bioinformatics.
During my time at Duke, I spent three years conducting research in a tissue engineering lab, alongside coursework and additional research experiences that gave me a strong foundation in genetic, molecular, and cellular engineering. After graduating, I worked as a researcher at a biotech company developing rapid, DNA diagnostic technologies under an NIH grant. In addition to my research, I was part of the proposal writing team and contributed to more than 10 grant proposals during my two years at the company.
I've tutored STEM subjects (mathematics, biology, chemistry) at both the pre-college and college level, and I also worked as a writing tutor for engineering students at Duke. On Wyzant, my primary focus is to help with scientific writing and mentor students through the graduate school application process, particularly those pursuing STEM fields. I'm passionate about helping students clearly communicate their research goals, experiences, and goals in a way that makes their application stand out.
I work with students to strengthen their writing and communicate their ideas effectively in personal statements, supplemental essays, and research proposals. I can help with everything from developing a strong argument and organizing an essay to revising and editing for clarity and flow. I also provide guidance on reaching out to prospective PIs, selecting schools that are a best fit, preparing for interviews, and developing an overall application strategy. Additionally, I assist students with early-career scholarship applications, particularly the NSF GFRP, with a focus on clear scientific communication, literature synthesis, and proper citations.
