Hey! I'm Skyler, and I'm a biomedical research scientist and biology tutor in San Diego, CA. I earned my PhD in Microbiology from UC Riverside in 2025. I’m now a postdoctoral researcher at the Salk Institute, where I work on developing gene therapies for rare inherited muscle disorders. At UC Riverside, I was a teaching assistant for undergraduate courses in microbiology, molecular biology, and genetics. I helped students break down complex concepts into manageable pieces using verbal, visual, and hands-on learning, and one-on-one support. I consistently received very positive student feedback for the care and clarity I brought to teaching.

I’ve also mentored undergraduate researchers during both my PhD and postdoctoral training, helping students build scientific knowledge, laboratory skills, and confidence. Altogether, I have about a decade of research, teaching, and mentorship experience spanning molecular biology, microbiology, cell biology, genetics, and computational biology/bioinformatics, along with science outreach experience with local high school students.

But beyond the degrees and experience, I’m here because I genuinely love teaching and sharing what I know. I’ve been fascinated by the life sciences since I was young, and one of my favorite parts of teaching is helping students see the beauty behind the complicated inner workings of living things.

Biology – like life in general – can feel complex, messy, abstract, and even baffling. But I believe almost anything can become easier to manage when you slow down, take it one step at a time, and break it into bite-sized pieces. That’s what I’m here to help you do. I take a personalized approach with every student: I first try to understand what you’re struggling with, how you learn best, and what you want to accomplish. From there, I adapt my explanations and teaching style to fit you. My goal is not just to help you memorize the material, but to help you truly understand it and feel more confident using it to achieve your goals.

Approved Subjects

Biochemistry

Biochemistry

Undergraduate research experience in bacterial genetics, metabolism and biochemistry. Graduate teaching experience in microbiology and molecular biology. PhD dissertation centered on fungal metabolism and genetics. Currently working on treatments for human inherited neuromuscular disorders.
Biology

Biology

I received my Bachelor of Science in Cell and Molecular Biology from Oakland University, Michigan, in 2018 where I also gained undergraduate research experience in bacterial genetics. During grad school I served as a teaching assistant in microbiology, molecular biology and genetics undergraduate courses. I received my PhD in Microbiology in 2025, where my dissertation focused on fungal genetics and metabolism. I am currently a researcher at the Salk Institute, where I work on developing treatments for rare inherited muscle disorders. During my graduate and postdoctoral experience I also gave undergraduate researchers one-on-one mentorship and training.
Genetics

Genetics

Genetics has been the common thread across my decade of research, teaching, and mentorship experience. As an undergraduate, my first research experience involved bacterial genetics, and later during my PhD I taught undergraduate courses in genetics, microbiology, molecular biology, with the latter two courses having heavy genetic components. My PhD dissertation was centered on fungal genetics and gene editing, and I currently work on developing treatments for inherited diseases of the muscle.
Microbiology

Microbiology

I received my BSc in Cell and Molecular Biology from Oakland University in 2018, followed by a PhD in Microbiology in 2025. During grad school I served as a teaching assistant for microbiology undergraduate courses, and my PhD research was centered on fungal genetics and metabolism.
Physiology

Physiology

I received my BSc in Cell and Molecular Biology in 2018 from Oakland University and my PhD in Microbiology in 2025 from UC Riverside. I have experience teaching undergraduate biology courses and mentoring/tutoring undergraduates one-on-one. I currently do research on treatments for rare inherited muscle disorders at the Salk Institute, which has given me an extensive understanding of human anatomy and physiology.
