Hey, I’m Aileen! I am currently an undergraduate student studying Cognitive Science at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). I’ve learned that a student’s success is shaped not just by the material, but by the environment surrounding their learning. Many students struggle not because they aren’t capable, but because they feel overwhelmed or unsure in approaching challenges. Because I’ve always been afraid to ask for help, viewing it as a personal flaw, I value creating an environment where students can reach out for help without feeling burdened or embarrassed. My goal is to help students find ways that are personally effective to them, whether they want to find better study strategies, improve their organization, or build confidence in challenging subjects.
I’ve tutored many neighborhood children and my younger sister’s friends during school breaks and weekends, and would frequently help them with homework, test preparation, or general academic support. Starting in this more relaxed and familiar setting helped me approach tutoring with a more relaxed attitude: maintaining professional boundaries but also creating a comfortable and engaging environment where students don’t feel as restricted and pressured in asking for help or communicating their needs. I’ve also engaged in tutoring sessions with my friends or peers while attending classes in university, particularly in revising essays and working through assignments together. These experiences taught me to be patient, flexible, and encouraging, especially when students feel frustrated or lack confidence.
I personally believe that communication is key in maintaining a successful learning bond, and therefore place a lot of effort into being as communicative as possible. I am responsive to, and prefer feedback from both the students and parents, and incorporate those into future lessons or my approach in teaching overall. Feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns, or if you’d like to schedule a lesson!
