About Rachel

Bio

My name is Rachel and I'm an experimental biologist. I graduated with a B.A. in Biological Sciences from the Cornell University College of Arts & Sciences and recently obtained a Master's in Biomedical Sciences from UC San Diego. I've been doing research for more than ten years and have a really strong, well-rounded background in the life sciences. I'm here at Wyzant because I'm passionate about continuing to teach even after leaving academia!

Teaching Experience: My passion for teaching began when I was in high school and was asked to be a low-stakes private clarinet teacher for my friend's little sister so she could figure out if she was excited about music. I rose to the challenge despite having never taught before and found it really enjoyable to re-frame and simplify concepts to make them palatable to other people. Since then, I have taught private clarinet lessons to a few elementary and middle school students on and off and it has been extremely rewarding to hear my students improve over time (and to have parents thank me for making their homes sound a little less... goose-like during practice sessions). During my time at Cornell, I served as a teaching assistant for a biochemistry course for 1.5 years. Finally, during my time as a researcher at UC San Diego, I've effectively mentored several undergraduate students in complex scientific concepts, laboratory techniques, and presentation preparation (written and oral).

Teaching subjects:
- Biology: I will accept students at all levels (middle/high school - college)
- Writing: I am a strong narrative and technical writer. My writing expertise ranges from book reports to lab reports, and I can also assist with academic applications.

Approved Subjects

Biology

Biology

I have an undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences from Cornell University, then went on to do academic research for a few years across a few labs, culminating in my graduating from UC San Diego with a Master's. I have teaching experience both in collegiate classroom settings as well as in the lab.
SAT Reading

SAT Reading

Even though it's been nearly fifteen years since I took the SAT, the skills that helped me score an 800 on the SAT reading section back then are critical ones that have helped me succeed throughout college and my research career. I will demystify the difficulties of the critical reading passages and provide students with efficient strategies to unlock their vocabulary, setting them up for success for the SAT and beyond. Qualifications: B.A. in Biological Sciences from Cornell University M.Sc. in Biomedical Sciences from UC San Diego Published in peer-reviewed academic journnals
Writing

Writing

As a scientist, the most important skill I learned is the ability to communicate my findings clearly. Writing is critical even in STEM and is overlooked too often in the education of scientists and engineers. Even though I studied biology, my education at Cornell University was vastly enriched by my literature and creative writing courses and has made me a well-rounded scientist and communicator overall. Where I can help: - Academic writing: expository writing for papers across subjects - Technical writing: lab reports, drafting scientific grants and manuscripts - Editing - Proofreading
