Hello, I’m Ellen. I graduated with a BA from Chapman University with a major in screenwriting and a minor in Anthropology. A few years later received a Masters in Education for Secondary English through the University of California Irvine’s MAT program (which included student teaching and instructional assistance). My love for literature and creative writing was fostered by the passion of my teachers and professors, who taught me how to think critically and ask strong questions about the texts I engaged with.
I want to bring my love of learning to students, encouraging them to find and develop their independent creative and critical thinking skills through reading, writing, and speaking. My tutoring style can be adapted to my student’s needs, whether it be for homework help and accountability, or mini-lessons on a topic to develop student understanding.
In addition to acquiring a Master's in Secondary English education with an ESL teaching certification, I have had 1.5 years of experience as an ESL instructional assistant for a local middle school. I assisted with individual and small groups of students with English, Social Studies, and Science. I provided language support and academic guidance to those in need and tutored students during free periods and independent workdays. I also have had a year of experience tutoring a college student, providing organizational frameworks and feedback for academic writing.
