Hi, I'm Tutor Sooyeong! -- pronounced Sue (short for Susan) and Young (not old!).

I graduated with honors from Brown University with Bachelor's degrees in Human Biology and Psychology. Throughout high school, college and post-grad, I've taught elementary, middle and high school students in various subjects including math subjects ranging from elementary math to precalculus, English skills like grammar and writing, and even violin (unfortunately, I'm out of practice at the moment!).

My specialty in tutoring is in math. My tutoring style is highly individualized, and my lessons involve conceptual explanations as well as practice problems. I like to take students through a thought process; I never feed them answers, because my ultimate goal for students is that they become independent problem solvers. (Personal background in math: During my K-12 years, math was always one of my strongest subjects, and I enjoyed success in math competitions such as MATHCOUNTS and AMC 8/10/12. I also tutor SAT Math. I scored 800 twice for SAT and an 800 for SAT Subject Math Level 2.)

I also tutor for SAT and PSAT. As a student at Brown, I volunteered to teach SAT prep courses to local high school students with limited academic resources. After graduation, I gained a successful teaching/tutoring experience in test prep while at Andyprep Academy in Seoul, South Korea. I taught summer intensive SAT and SSAT Math classes with anywhere between 5 to 25 students at a time. I also tutored 1:1 various math subjects including 8th grade math, algebra and SAT Math.

One of my best students who attended my SAT Math class and who also received private tutoring from me was able to raise his math score significantly. On the practice exams administered by the SAT prep academy, his score went from 490 to 770 after one summer.

Feel free to get in touch with me to discuss what your specific needs are. Please provide me with as much detail as you can so I can tailor the lessons to benefit you!

Korean

Korean

Born in Korea, I spent half my childhood there and half in the U.S. My knowledge of the Korean language, culture and entertainment industry earned me a job as a Bilingual Product Writer at Netflix, where I worked for 2.5 years. I authored many of the English synopses you see on Netflix for Korean language content! I've also lived and worked in Korea, where I translated (Korean to English) various business documents/presentations and PhD dissertations. I can teach conversational Korean (if you want to travel there), help you learn Korean characters and read (those K-pop song lyrics you want to sing along to, for example) and help you correct your pronunciation to sound like a native!

Knowledgeable and patient teacher.

She is a very knowledgeable and patient teacher who is able to answer all of my doubts. Mainly I have been working with her for Mathcounts preparation on a daily basis. She was flexible with scheduling time for classes. I would recommend her to any student who is looking to prepare for competition math.
