Hello,

I'm Spenser, and I'm grateful for your visit to my profile and for the prospects of working together to improve your science and math learning experience!

A bit about myself: I graduated in 2014, magna cum laude with Distinction in Research, from Cornell University with a degree in Nutritional Biochemistry (on a pre-med track). I took a "gap year" between my undergraduate studies and medical school to further pursue my research interests in public health nutrition, nutrigenomics (the study of how diet influences the expression of genetic information), and gastrointestinal physiology. I have published several seminal papers in peer-reviewed biomedical science journals, and am currently leading a multi-site pre-clinical study that aims to elucidate how the collective microbial community in our gut (the microbiome) influences our ability to utilize nutrients from our diet. I'm now an MD/PhD student at the University of Arizona College of Medicine.

Aside from my current position, I am passionate about learning, and find that working one-on-one with other students is a mutually enriching and rewarding experience. I have had exposure to many different types of learning methods, and I bring several years of direct tutoring experience with students of all ages in various science (i.e., general/ organic chemistry, physics, biology, anatomy & physiology) and math (i.e., pre-algebra through calculus) disciplines, as well as in the applied sciences and technical/ biomedical research writing. I find that successful mastery of subject content involves the following: 1) working with the student in a relaxed and familiar environment, 2) fostering a student-tutor "match" based on mutual respect and great communication, 3) understanding and addressing the root cause of potential road blocks to learning, 4) tailoring a study plan to reflect the unique needs of the student, and 5) consistent, challenging (yet not overwhelming) reinforcement of subject material.

As a life-long learner, I like to show my students the oft

Nutrition

Nutrition

I completed my B.S. in nutritional sciences (concentrating in molecular nutrition), graduating magna cum laude, from the Division of Nutritional Sciences at Cornell University (Ithaca, NY). While at Cornell and prior to medical school, I have published five original research articles in peer-reviewed basic and applied science journals on various topics pertaining to nutrition (nutrigenomics, gastrointestinal physiology and nutrient uptake, nutrient biomarker development, etc.). Also, I have tutored undergraduate and graduate science students at Cornell University as a teaching assistant in nutrition courses (such as NS 3450, Physiochemical and Biological Aspects of Food) as well as supervised student research projects in the nutritional sciences.
Study Skills

Study Skills

I've graduated with honors from a highly challenging and competitive undergraduate institution (Cornell University), and have years of experience learning the best ways to prepare and plan for, as well as succeed in, my academics. I've also worked one-on-one with students as a private tutor and teaching assistant to help them acquire necessary study skills (e.g., learning how to construct and follow a study plan, set goals, and balance academic/social priorities) for academic success.

Knowledgeable and Patient. Very well prepared.

Spenser has been a great help to our son. He's patient and very good at explaining the content. He makes the subject easy to understand and helped my son accomplish his first 100% on a math test. We highly recommend Spenser!
