California State Polytechnic University Pomona, CA (Liberal Studies)
Hello and thank you for taking the time to view my profile!
My name is Janet, and I am a highly qualified teacher with nearly a decade of teaching experience teaching multiple subjects. I've taught regular classes and worked with small groups of special needs students, the gifted, and EL students. I have also been working with students who are too ill to temporarily attend their neighborhood schools since 2008 through the Home & Hospital Program at Irvine Unified School District. In addition, I provide quality in-home tutoring services to students in Orange County.
I am a graduate of California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, CA (Cal Poly Pomona) with a Bachelor's Degree in Liberal Studies. I've earned two teaching credentials: a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential, K-12 and a Single Subject Teaching Credential in Biology. I do speak and understand some Korean. I am highly organized, energetic, and ready to help your student succeed!
I teach all elementary school subjects and all middle school subjects. At the high school level, I can teach English, Pre-Algebra, Transitional Algebra, Algebra I, Geometry, History, American Government, Biology, General Science and Life Science. Contact me about your student’s particular needs!
I can meet you at your home and we can discuss and pin-point the academic areas your student needs the most help. By taking a look at your student's information via the school's website or by previous report cards/ progress reports and old tests/assignments, I can better determine how to best support your student. After we set a schedule, we will then use their homework and textbooks as a guide to increase your student's understanding and retention in their academic subjects. Your student will learn how to set goals and reach them, how to study effectively, how to achieve and maintain organization, and how to manage their time to reduce stress and "cramming," so that your student will become a more independent, responsible, and confident student.
I recommend at least a minimum of twice a week sessions for an hour per session up to four times a week for an hour and a half per session maximum. I find that less than 2 hours per week to be ineffective in improving a student's grades substantially. With our combined efforts, I am positive that we can increase your student's ability to earn better grades by two grades. I've helped students earning C's and D's on their own to earning A's and B's under my guidance. As long as you and your student are willing to meet me halfway, we can go far academically. Together, we can help your student become more successful and confident!
All materials such as paper, pencils, calculator, erasers, workbooks, etc. needed for studying and completing assignments and projects must be provided by the parents. I typically only work with students when school is in session. I do not work with students during holidays or other days when students do not attend school. Please let me know in advance if you would like me to come and work with your student on non-school days so we can work out an arrangement.
I look forward to meeting you and your student! We can do this, together!
***Please note, I do require parents give me notice of cancellation of tutoring sessions as soon as they are aware they need to cancel otherwise a cancellation fee will be charged. I've had the unfortunate experience of some parents telling me at the door that they're canceling sessions or book sessions with me "just in case" and canceling last minute. I do understand that on occasion a student is ill or has a special event to attend, no homework due to testing at school, etc. and cancellations do happen but I would like to be available to work with students who need me and my expertise. If you do cancel our session, please understand that there will be a chance that I may become unavailable for that particular time and date as I may make other commitments. I will try my best to accommodate students who need to reschedule but my availability may become limited as the school year progresses and my schedule fills up. I apologize for having to insert this long notice in my profile but it has now become necessary. Thank you for your patience and understanding.*** Hello and thank you for taking the time to view my profile!

I reserve the right to charge 50% of the normal tutoring fee for any tutoring schedule cancellations without adequate notice.
Janet has worked with my 12 year old daughter since 3rd grade and has had several sessions with my son over the years, who is now a freshman in high school. Initially, Janet worked with my daughter on reading comprehension. At the time, she was below grade level in reading. It was within several weeks where we saw strong improvement. Janet was very effective at helping my daughter raise her reading level by teaching her to not just read to read but to read to understand, infer where appropriate, and help the student to open up their mind to see what is really involved with the whole story or content, even non fiction. This comes easily to some students but when a child struggles with this Janet does an excellent job of connecting with them and also holds them accountable for doing their best. We also had Janet work on grammar and writing. She is an exceptional tutor in this area as well. About half way through 6th grade my daughter tested at an 8th grade reading level. My son worked with Janet a number of times from about 7th-current 9th (honors level). Specifically, it was on writing and some grammar. Janet was an extremely valuable resource in this area for my son. She guided him on some assignments by not fixing his work but talking through how and why you should approach a writing assignment a certain way. She was able to help him see more clearly what the teacher was looking for. Janet always took the time to really review the rubric for the assignment to ensure her student was on the right track to complete the assignment to their highest potential. This is so critical so they can use the same thought process on future assignments. Janet is an outstanding tutor that will exceed your expectations!
Janet has tutored my daughter for weeks, until she suddenly dropped her. It came as a shock to us! On the night before my daughter's next tutoring session, Janet abruptly changed the tutoring time starting the following day. Apparently, she took on another student. We were stunned since Janet did not ask us to switch the time, instead she made a declarative statement. When we mentioned that the new time would conflict with my daughter's bedtime, Janet said that she will no longer tutor her anymore. Another odd incident is when Janet never showed up to tutor. Later that evening, I received a text from Janet...she was busy tutoring another student and forgot about my daughter's session. Be forewarned...Janet may suddenly give you a new schedule, and tutoring services will be terminated if it conflicts with your schedule. Also, she may never show up because she forgot about you! :(
I'm sorry to have disappointed you but you've canceled over 50% of the tutoring sessions scheduled and I never knew if I was working with your daughter until a couple of hours before our scheduled session. It makes it very difficult to schedule any other sessions because of this. I would have been happy to keep her on for a session later in the day so I could accommodate one of my former students who asked me to come back to tutor four times a week but it did not work with your schedules. I'm sorry to have disappointed you but I hope you are able to find a tutor on WyzAnt with a more flexible schedule.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
