I am a fluent French speaker and I have loved teaching French since 1979 to people of all ages and levels. Teaching French is my life's work and I gain satisfaction from watching my students achieve their language goals.
I create a stress-free and fun environment in which students learn French language easily, and I believe this is the best way to acquire a new language. I have spent time developing my own curriculum to ensure that each student receives a personalized and effective French education.
I am able to tailor my teaching to wide range of French language needs such as French for fun, for travel, for business, for school and college, for SAT II and AP tests, and of course, for fluency. I have worked as an instructor in private companies, schools and community centers in the Orange County area, and I have worked with children as young as 2.5 to adults as old as 84. My students' grades, test scores, and language proficiency consistently improve and I guarantee that every student I work with will see real progress.
I hold a Bachelor's degree in French Literature and a Master's degree in French literature Education. I am passionate about French and I am confident in my ability to improve anybody's language skills. References from students are available upon request. My son stopped French lesson two years ago when his high school discontinued French program, and we were looking for a tutor who could give him a short-term, intensive French class so that he can improve his very shaky French. My son has had Nilo for about a month--1.5 hr lesson, 2 times a week. We are very happy with Nilo's instruction. She is strong in every sector of French--grammar, reading, composition, and conversation; more importantly, she knows how to communicate, explain, and encouraging my son. They spent the first week deciding on curriculum, while reviewing basic grammar and vocabulary, and then they started moving really fast with lots of homework, which my son does willingly and dutifully. We are pleased that my son made a remarkably rapid progress within a month. I can't wait to see how much more progress he will make with Nilo. The best part of Nilo's teaching is that she not only teaches French, but also teaches what are the qualities to learn a new language successfully--structure, patience, self-discipline, diligence, and dedication. Nilo is one of the best teachers my son has ever had. I wish more teachers at public schools were like her.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
In every lesson I focus on grammar, vocabulary, conversation, and pronunciation. Based on the student's level and age I decide what learning materials to use. I use my own French book for Beginner students and more advanced text books and work books for intermediate and advanced students. For children, I use various educational hands on materials as well as basic conversation for a fun and interactive learning experience. Every class is customized to the need of the student.
