Smith College (English )
Welcome to my profile! I am a highly effective, full-time English tutor, writing coach, editor, and college application essay expert with an English degree and a high school English teaching license. I am one of the top WyzAnt tutors nationwide, and among these, I am the only English tutor; I am also one of the only top tutors with a 5.0 rating.
As a writing and grammar revolutionary on a mission to transform the teaching and application of English skills in our beloved SoCal, I improve my students' abilities--and lives--with expertise, personal style, humor, conscientiousness, and great joy. If you're reading my page, you might already have an idea that typical school methods for teaching reading and writing are blandly less-than-ideal; it is my self-appointed task to right this wrong with the strongest interpersonal skills, writing intuition, and grammatical prowess you can find in a teacher!
I can't say enough how much I value and am excited by the potential of each person I work with. I work EXTREMELY hard for each and every one of my students and expect each student to rise to my level of effort. While I have high expectations for all my students, I adjust my approach for each student in order to best serve him or her; for many of my students, for example, I design specific programs concerning goals, strengths, and areas for improvement. I am very familiar with different learning styles and see education as an extremely holistic matter. In fact, I have and research perspectives about education that I love to share.
One of my main goals with my teaching is to break down the rampant [over]complications, haziness, and pretentiousness that usually accompany writing, reading, and grammar in our society--and in our school system. Many of my adult students in particular appreciate my no-nonsense approach to grammar and literature; they LOVE that they can feel comfortable asking me questions they would feel 'stupid' asking in other situations.
Efficiency is extremely important to me. I have the 2nd fastest response time that I have seen on the entire WyzAnt website, which is something I have worked hard to achieve and maintain. My clients enjoy being able to get in touch with me very quickly via text in regard to any questions they have or endeavors we are working on remotely together. Furthermore, I regularly see many tutors wasting large chunks of tutoring sessions and beating around the bush; with me, however, accomplishing goals during the sessions I provide is of the utmost importance, and I aim never to squander time. I make my sessions feel purposeful and fulfilling, yet comfortable, fun, and interesting. On that note, I have served as a leader and coach in several organizations throughout my life, and my strong leadership qualities inform my tutoring in a very unique way. I provide clarity with instruction and direction, define a clear path for work, and provide motivation in spades, among many other things!
I'm a poet and artist by nature--a lover of beauty and all the nuances in and around this amazingly maddening thing we call life. I'm extremely upbeat, positive, spunky, and passionate, with a robust sense of humor and desire to inspire other people and make them laugh. As a painter, professional violinist, aspiring guitarist, slam poet, writer, fencer, songwriter, blogger, actress, and designer, I'm interested in many things, and I have several goals in life that I work every day to achieve. My heart is absolutely overflowing with love for people and love for life. I do not take my life or work lightly and am constantly striving to push myself out of my comfort zone by learning new things and improving myself.
If your or your child's goals include growing in ability, gaining confidence, and experiencing a love for life and learning, you owe it to yourself to get in touch with me! My work ethic and profound love for people make my work truly unique; I can't think of a job I could enjoy more, and my joy in my work is a key component of my tutoring and life. As such, my commitment to bringing the dreams of my tutoring and editing clients to fruition is fueled by unprecedented energy and love. Helping my students grow as people and learners is my obsession! :) Thank you for reading; have a wonderful day! Welcome to my profile! Phoebe is the most patient, professional, understanding, hard working, and experienced tutor; I couldn't have asked for a better tutor. I had a blast doing essays with her. Even if you think you have nothing to write about for your college essays, she will find personal qualities worthy to use in your essays. She will help your essays stand out in a pool of thousands of applicants. She tailors and methodically plans each session to the needs of the student. She is a very dedicated tutor staying until up until the early morning to finish editing my essays. I have her to thank for getting me into Emory University. This could not have been done without her help. I appreciate all that she has done for me. I honestly cannot thank her enough for helping me get into one of my top choice universities. She is a invaluable resource to have, and without her I do not know where I would be today.
Not only is she great with college essays, but also for ACT preparation and AP Language/Literature help. ACT reading/writing is challenging. She told me strategies and tricks to do during test. With a lot of practice and Phoebe's help, I was able to get from a 29 ACT to a 34 ACT score. My essay went from an 8 to a 10.
Phoebe is an expert in English; no matter what you do with Phoebe, just know she'll be an excellent choice.
Phoebe helped me write my college application essays and I honestly don’t know how I would have gone through such a stressful time without her expertise. She was so considerate and took the time to listen and help create end products that both of us were proud of. She not only made my essays sound more sophisticated and succinct, but also made sure my own voice shined through in them. After I submitted my essays, I was so proud of them and knew that they could not have been any better. I am so thankful for Phoebe because she made me think “outside the box.” Due to her creativity and high expectations for me, my essays were able to stand out compared to those of others. I am so happy to say that Phoebe played a big role in my acceptance to USC, which was my top choice university.
Phoebe is a very caring and dedicated tutor. She reassured me during times of panic. She is so easy to talk to, and always makes time for her students. She was editing my essays throughout Thanksgiving weekend and winter break, even though she was out of town! She is very accessible and will not rest until both she and her student are happy with the end product.
I am so thankful that I was able to find a tutor who is so dedicated, caring, and optimistic. I would gladly recommend her to anybody. You cannot go wrong with Phoebe. She is an expert in what she does and will most definitely be worth your time. I know she will not disappoint and will go “above and beyond” of what is expected of her. I could not have asked for a better tutor!
Phoebe has tutored me for the past two years with English classes and college prep such as the ACT and college application essays. She is reliable and punctual. When she is running late, which rarely happens, she immediately lets you know so you are not wondering if she forgot. Phoebe's tutoring style is ideal when one is trying to master the English language. She does not dictate the essays for you, but pushes you to think more analytically and deeply by posing questions and guiding you. I would recommend Phoebe to everyone who is looking for a great and ideal English tutor. THANK YOU, Phoebe!
As an international student, writing has always been my biggest problem. I am so glad I met Miss Phoebe. She is such an optimist and she works super hard! She really helps me a lot improve my essay writing. Now I feel more confident writing essays :)
I highly recommend Phoebe to anyone whether you need help with college application essays or improvement with writing skills. I found her on WyzAnt.com back in mid-August and started my transfer application I believe beginning of Sept. She is so helpful regarding college counseling and application editing. I got into UCLA, UC Davis, UCSB, UCR, Purdue University and hopefully U of Wisconsin Madison! Without her help, I could never get into these amazing schools!
I knew she was a very patient, professional, and knowledgeable tutor by the end of first lesson! I enjoy her tutoring style, and I love every essay she edited for me. Phoebe is truly a brilliant writer and caring tutor. She always replied to my emails and text messages within short periods of time. We worked together efficiently in the past 3 months to finish my 12 college transfer application essays! She is the best!
Phoebe is a wonderful tutor, very patient and well prepared in every class. She gives me great ideas to improve my essays. Phoebe is the best tutor I ever had.
Over the years, I have tried to find a tutor that would help me improve my writing skills and I wasn't very successful until I stumbled upon Phoebe. She helped me get over my issue of being scared of making mistakes while writing and she also helped me during the stressful college application time. She helped me make my college essays accurately portray me. She was very patient and I believe that without her I would not have been able to get accepted to the nursing program at Azusa Pacific University.
When I read Phoebe’s profile for the first time, the line that caught my attention most was this: “…I improve my students' abilities--and lives--with expertise.” I wondered how having an English tutor could improve my life. “I understand that it could improve my English, but my life?” was my thought.
Well, I found out that it can happen! Phoebe helped me to find my own personality in English, a language that was foreign to me. She made me feel confident enough to use the English that I already have and showed me new resources that can enrich my vocabulary and improve my grammar. She is incredibly patient and an amazing listener. She understood perfectly what I needed from our sessions, and her classes are very dynamic, which I love. Phoebe represents the inspirational ability and spirit of teaching, and class by class, you can see that!
Update: it has been a while now, Phoebe is the first tutor that is really useful, according to my son Jeffrey. We are fortunate to find her!
Phoebe helped enormously in the critical reading section of the SAT. I started out in the 600's, and Phoebe worked through many practice critical reading passages with me, explaining confusing questions and words. This extra practice and interactive thinking greatly improved my analysis skills and I achieved a perfect critical reading score on the SAT. Thanks, Phoebe!
Even though my son was reluctant to accept tutoring for this subject at first because it's hard to teach anyone about critical reading, I was not about to give in without a try. I knew my son is a bright child and only needed a little push in the right direction. Phoebe was the perfect tutor because she was intelligent, creative, and flexible to deal with kids like my son. She was never pushy and yet worked with him efficiently from the start to not waste any time. She was very prompt to respond to our calls. She is an extraordinary tutor. We are very pleased.
Phoebe is an excellent tutor! She worked with my son on writing for English Literature and the ACT. Her expertise in the subject areas brought focus and clarity which allowed my son to improve academically and gain 4 points on the ACT English portion of the test. I found her to be very flexible and accommodating with regard to targeting the specific areas of academic need. I appreciate her passion for helping students reach their potential. Thank you, Phoebe, for your amazing work with my son!
Phoebe's profile is pretty fantastic. The real thing is even better. I hesitate to wax poetic about Phoebe, however, because when you find someone amazing it's best to keep quiet otherwise she'll get too busy and won't have time for you!! However, Phoebe was extremely busy when I reached out in desperation and still she made time to work with my high school senior on his college application essays, a mere 2 weeks before he needed to have them completed. And her response time and communication skills are outstanding.
Phoebe took on the challenge, and worked with my son, and in just 2 sessions produced 2 outstanding essays. My son came home excited and proud of his work. There was a little bit of smugness ("Mom, you wouldn't believe how much we got done in just one session") that Phoebe was a better tutor than mom was...but I'll take that any day over the resistance that was met when I tried to help my son. We had hit a brick wall, and Phoebe came along and saw exactly the right direction to go and busted through the wall. Fantastic!
I wish all teachers, tutors, and anyone who works with kids could have the same competence and enthusiasm as Phoebe. She's got that special, unquantifiable "thing" that people respond to and that gets work done with zero fuss or frustration. Without a doubt, she turned this challenging college application process completely around for us. I only wish I had found her earlier, and plan to get on her schedule early when it's time for my younger son to start his applications.
Before meeting Phoebe, I struggled tremendously writing essays and doing reading comprehension passages in the Graduate Record Exam (GRE). I used to take almost 3 hours to finish writing one essay. Since the GRE requires 2 essays, one issue essay and one argumentative essay, I would take roughly 6 hours to complete both. Moreover, I would take forever understanding even one paragraph in the reading comprehension section. However, ever since I started receiving help from Phoebe two times a week, both my reading and writing scores have soared. In less than two months, my reading comprehension scores improved by 8 points. Also, writing essays has become easy for me. I am now able to write my essays for the GRE, each within 30 mins.
Simultaneously, Phoebe has been helping me with my letters of intent. The process of writing a letter of intent has been tedious and time consuming. But Phoebe was able to effectively direct me. Moreover, she has consistently comforted me during the times when I felt so overwhelmed and stressed.
I definitely recommend Phoebe to anyone who is struggling with writing essays because you will see results within a short period of time.
My son is taking college English and since Phoebe has been tutoring him has been writing much better essays. Phoebe's style of teaching is so good because not only does she help him learn he actually is motivated to go each time. I could not have asked for a better tutor and feel very blessed that Phoebe is making a difference in my son's education.
My son started the second grade with a very messy and incoherent writing style. In fact, his teacher didn’t grade one of his essays since he completely missed the topic and wrote a bunch of unrelated sentences. That was a little alarming for us. After a few sessions with Phoebe, his transformation was amazing: he now writes very coherently; there is a nice flow in his essays; he stays on topic; and he writes very neatly. Above all, he now enjoys writing! As a parent, I couldn’t wish for a better tutor. She was easy to reach and a delight to work with. After each lesson, she sends us detailed comments about my son’s progress and what we need to do help him with the process. I am very glad we found her.
Phoebe always gives me feedback on the progress of each lesson given to my daughter. She personalizes assignments and materials to help my daughter to improve. I am very happy that God put Phoebe in our way.
We hired Phoebe to help my son write his college essay. She was such a blessing! The college application process is stressful in itself, so it was so nice to have Phoebe helping my son with his essay. She was so patient and easy to work with, and worked around my sons very busy schedule. Phoebe helped him to brainstorm his ideas and focus on writing about the specific experience he was trying to convey in his essay. She encouraged him and gave him confidence in his writing abilities and skills. I highly recommend Phoebe!!
I am a foreign student who can speak English well, but wanted to have some lessons over the summer to make it productive. That's when I found Phoebe. She is an amazing tutor! She helped me study all aspects of English when it comes to the SAT's and she was so informative and easy to follow. She gave me notes on my work and also printed out notes for me to look back on for when I wouldn't be able to see her. Though we only had around 3 sessions to meet, I have never learnt so much about how to score better on the SAT's than from her. I would definitely recommend her to anyone who is in need of a tutor and is looking for a way to boost their writing, vocabulary, and grammar skills. She is patient and intelligent and I could not have asked for a better tutor.
Ms. Phoebe C. has been a great tutor. From college essays to job resumes, she has excelled in helping my daughter with her writing skills. My daughter has had immense success thanks to Phoebe, making it into the college of her choice and scoring a wonderful summer job! I appreciate Phoebe's patience and positive attitude towards teaching. We have had other tutors in the past who would charge 4 times as much for the same quality of instruction. We would definitely recommend Phoebe to anyone looking for writing instruction.
I came from Korea 11 years ago, and I always felt the need to find a tutor who can help improve my writing. I never cared to find a tutor because I did not know anyone who could refer me to grammar/writing instructor. That is how I came across WyzAnt and met Phoebe.
Phoebe is the best tutor I could have ever asked for. She is ALWAYS on time, and the best part about having Phoebe as your tutor is that SHE WILL ALWAYS ANSWER YOUR EMAIL IN 1 HOUR. Time is valuable. I really respect Phoebe for always checking her emails frequently, and being on time for a session.
I just finished my MBA program and I will now be attending a law school in Los Angeles. During my MBA program, I was wait-listed on the law school in LA. I had to continuously send in letter of continued interest to this school, and I am so glad Phoebe helped me along the way because I AM NOW ACCEPTED!!! Phoebe not only taught me to be a better writer, but she also encouraged me to be a challenging individual. I am very thankful for Phoebe, and I am sure no one will regret having her as a tutor.
PHOEBE IS GREAT!!!
I hired Phoebe to help me freshen up on my English skills and guide me in preparing for college after a ten-year academic hiatus. Phoebe has been an outstanding tutor who is caring, sweet, patient, encouraging, and attentive. She is an effective listener who answers questions thoroughly while making sure you understand clearly before moving on. Also, Phoebe has great ways to make you think and give yourself the chance to correct your own work, instead of just giving you an easy answer. I feel that this technique allows my brain to work at a higher level while providing a sense of capability and foundation for self-confidence.
It is obvious that Phoebe loves teaching and has a gift for it. I feel that she is comprehensive in the many learning styles that people differ in and is more than capable of teaching in a manner that best suits the needs of you or your child. I definitely see the notable progress in my capabilities and I look forward to each and every session I have with her. Cheers to keeping the world knowledgeable!
Well, my seven months of tutoring has come to an end and I couldn't be more pleased with Phoebe! One of my top goals going into touring with her was to prepare myself for the placement test for college level English. I knew I had to come a long way with my English skills to place at college level, and I was terrified of that day to arrive when I would have to take the test.
To my astonishment, I placed in college English with flying colors! I only missed two out of 22 questions on the "sentence correction" section. Although I know my success has a lot to do with my own self-motivation and dedication to learning, I also know that Phoebe - and her talent for teaching - was what helped me to accomplish my goals in such little time.
Phoebe's sweet nature and positive attitude allowed me to feel comfortable when I was insecure about the work I had done, and while she was honest about the things that needed adjustment to become a great piece of work, she always gave me a reason to be proud of what I had already brought to the table. She's a supportive and talented tutor/woman with a great sense of humor that also possess the skills to help anyone build their confidence in the subjects she teaches. Without hesitation, I would recommend Phoebe to anyone -she's the best!
My daughter and I are extremely pleased to have found Phoebe. She has exceeded our expectations from the very first tutoring session. We inquired about a tutor as my daughter was struggling in her college English class. Phoebe came into the situation with no hesitation and helped my daughter raise her confidence and class grade. Phoebe is professional, kind, helpful, and above all, very thorough. She communicates clearly and promptly with an immense amount of helpful feedback. Phoebe's gentle nature combined with her focus and efficiency created the perfect environment for my daughter to feel comfortable while being productive. I am incredibly grateful we found such an amazing tutor and I would highly recommend Phoebe to anyone.
A year and a half ago, I chose to return to college and finish my Bachelor's degree. I had been away from school for many years. Therefore, I knew I was extremely rusty in the fields of writing, grammar, essay composition, and so on. I'm also dyslexic. Instead of struggling another semester by myself, I made the decision to get a tutor to enlighten my path. Why I didn't do this earlier I don't know.
In came Phoebe to set me straight. I have to say this first: the right personality was key for me in choosing a tutor. As an adult, it's not usually easy asking a stranger to reteach you proper punctuation without feeling less smart at the end of a section. I did not want it to feel like a student-teacher scenario, but instead one with two equal-headed people exchanging ideas, methods, and so on in order to learn from one another. I looked at many fantastically qualified people but Phoebe just showed the right dynamic I knew would work with my style of learning.
Phoebe is understanding, passionate, and intuitive about the needs of the student, yet she challenges you to explore your mind to find the answers needed. I don't feel self-conscious about my dyslexia with her; it's just seen as a small bump which is easily jumped. I love our meetings because we focus on my subject matter, laying down all my jumbled-up, crazy ideas into a sensible format, understanding the right flow for an amazing paper, and applying my writing style to the writing formats, just to name a few examples. It is important for me to recognize my errors and learn to fix them. Phoebe is helping me develop a high sense of recognition towards my grammar and spelling errors. Through writing and spelling exercises, I am given the tools needed to accomplish this.
She has been my tutor for close to a year now and I feel I still want to learn more. Phoebe's bright personality but focused mindset is the right fit for type A to happy-go-lucky personalities.
Phoebe is such a kind and caring person! She truly cares about each of her students and about their work. She is so patient and such a hard worker! She always goes out of her way to make sure you are happy and satisfied with your work. She is more than just a tutor, she is a great friend. She loves helping and making sure you get a great grade on whatever you are working on. She's the very berry best, and I am so happy to call her not just my tutor but my friend.
Phoebe is extremely smart, knowledgeable, organized, and efficient, which makes her an awesome writing coach and editor! She also gives valuable and effective feedback so that I am able to learn from her edits and grow as a writer. I strongly recommend Phoebe to anyone looking for a writing tutor and/or editor, and feel really fortunate to have found her on WyzAnt.
This year, I am a senior in high school and I recently went through the college application process. For those who have gone through this process, you probably understand the pressure and competition involved, especially for colleges in California. At school, I was constantly pressed for time due to my homework schedule. Unfortunately, this made it very difficult to put aside the necessary time for college applications and essays. By the start of November, I was in a panic - I was still deciding on a major, and I was unsure of what direction to head in as far as the essays. I knew I needed to seek outside help.
Contacting Phoebe was the best decision I made. Phoebe was extremely calm and understanding throughout the entire process and helped relieve my stress and anxiety along the way. She constantly brought forth really creative approaches and ideas throughout the entire process, which allowed me to think more creatively about my writing. We outlined each essay together as to what it should say overall. What was most important for me was that I was able to write the essays myself, while receiving input, advice, ideas, and revisions along the way. Phoebe also developed a schedule for me to complete my essays, so I was never writing at the last minute. Rather, I was able to write without being pressured for time, so my voice, personality and ideas could shine through.
During this process, I was also deciding between two different majors, one that I truly wanted to pursue and the other being one that I thought would just help me get in to more schools. Phoebe encouraged me to stick with Biology, the major I was most passionate about, and she helped me bring my interest for Biology to the forefront of my essays. I now am so thankful that I followed her advice!
As well, Phoebe always made herself available when I needed help and even went as far as giving me advice and edits on my essays while she was out of town, which shows her immense dedication to what she does.
Phoebe also has an incredible understanding of how the UC and Common Application essays are evaluated, and I was able to tailor my essays to her advice. In the end, I was so incredibly satisfied with every one of my essays and I was amazed how they resonated my own voice and truly spoke for the person I am. I thank Phoebe and everything she did to help me. She is a huge reason why I was accepted to nearly every university I applied to. I am so happy to say I am attending UCLA in the fall and majoring in Biology!
Phoebe C. far exceeded my expectations as an editor and writing coach. She was insightful and fact-based in her observations and suggestions. It is a rare occurrence that you have an opportunity to work with someone who is not only extremely competent but personable, patient, and willing to provide that individual consideration when necessary. Phoebe's personable approach made it easy to accept her verbal feedback. She was able to challenge my thought processes in such a way that I felt motivated and inspired. Please pass my sincere thanks on to Phoebe. She is a credit to the WyzAnt website and it is because of my most excellent editing experience with Phoebe that I will certainly recommend WyzAnt to all of my friends. Again, many many thanks to Phoebe C. and your tutoring website. I could not be more pleased about the professional experience I had with both.
Phoebe is a patient and creative tutor that is very helpful in motivating my son, an active first grader, to focus on his work and engage him in learning. Her command of using English is very sophisticated and I would recommend her to anyone.
Phoebe's approach was sophisticated and thoughtful. She was able to draw out and emphasize positive elements of my writing style. Her feedback was spot-on while also being encouraging and enthusiastic. It's clear she is very talented and capable.
Phoebe is great. She helps to publish academic papers with her beautiful writing styles. Even though she is not an expert of my field of study (I am a PhD student), she is able to comprehend the language I wrote and polish my writing with a more concise and beautiful style. She is easy to reach by phone or email, and always on time for the session.
Phoebe is kind and intelligent, and I feel my writing skills improved every time I meet her. Since English is not my first language, I always lack confidence to communicate and write in English. Phoebe recognizes this issue and tries to urge me explain my writings to her, face to face, and asks me to write/rephrase sentences during the tutoring session. This methodology builds my confidence to write immediately when I come up with an idea, and I feel more confident to speak because she never laughs at my poor English.
I have already published academic papers with Phoebe's help, and I will definitely recommend her lesson to anyone who needs rigid and beautiful writings for academic paper, and who lack confidence to write in English like me.
She did a very extraordinary session last Sunday. It was a difficult time for our student and Phoebe was sensitive, kind, and set appropriate tasks that beautifully suited the circumstances (the loss of our student's mother). She had her write poems about love and loss, which was very helpful to her at this difficult time. Phoebe is one fine tutor - an A++ for her work.
Returning to college after 30-years in the work force, Phoebe was significant in helping me endure English Comp I & English Comp II. Her compassionate guidance, vast knowledge, and prolific competency were essential in my attainment of an “A”, in both classes. The dedication that Phoebe demonstrates towards her students is exquisite. I am very appreciative for Phoebe’s guidance and devotion.
One of the best decisions we have made as a family has been to hire Phoebe as our daughter’s tutor. Right from the beginning, Phoebe focused on my daughter’s needs. Phoebe’s enthusiasm about teaching is contagious because my daughter’s attitude towards English has changed completely--from being scared to feeling able to complete any assignment with a very positive attitude. Phoebe motivates and encourages my daughter to achieve her goals, always providing very constructive feedback. My daughter says that concepts are not difficult when Phoebe is the one who explains the material to her. Phoebe is also teaching her to organize her tasks in such a way that she can meet deadlines without feeling overwhelmed or discouraged. Now that we see her new work ethic, we see Phoebe more as a mentor for our girl.
After taking a 2 year break from learning violin, my daughter decided to enroll in her High School’s beginner’s orchestra program. The material she was expected to play was too advanced for her skill set, and it became immediately apparent that my daughter would need tutoring in order to keep up with the class. My daughter quickly hit a point of extreme frustration with her music assignments; apathy became her reigning attitude toward her orchestra class. Phoebe was our godsend.
After assessing her needs, Phoebe began helping her to build the necessary knowledge base in music theory while assisting her with proper form, technique and skill. Phoebe set weekly achievable goals and assigned appropriate exercises to make the challenging class material more accessible for my daughter. Slowly but surely, she began to improve. By the end of the school year, she was playing with significantly more skill, confidence and enjoyment.
Phoebe’s passion for music and teaching really shines through in her lessons. Her charismatic and upbeat personality helped my daughter to feel at ease throughout the learning process. Phoebe’s genuine enthusiasm is infectious as I now find my daughter practicing well beyond the requisite daily 20 minute sessions. Now a year later, my daughter skill set has increased greatly. Phoebe often supplements her school music selections with fun, appropriately challenging pieces to keep things fun and motivating.
Additionally, we've hired Phoebe to help my daughter with her English course. She is currently facilitating my daughter's development with her writing, critical thinking and story/poem analysis skills. Phoebe excels in taking the time to understand and truly communicate with her during literary discussions and writing exercises. These lessons are helping her to learn how to grow and build her idea "parts" into meaningful, relevant "wholes." Phoebe's much-needed assistance with editing rough drafts has been invaluable.
I’ve always been impressed with Phoebe’s balance of firm, focused guidance and cheery encouragement. She is always 100% engaged with my daughter and the lesson at hand. Phoebe teaches with an incredible amount of patience, effectiveness and care. She has a great sense of humor, to boot!
Phenomenal teachers are those who can inspire and instill a love of learning. Phoebe is truly phenomenal. We feel lucky to have met such an amazing teacher. It’s been an absolute pleasure working with her.
Phoebe has been a great tutor for my daughter. She has been helping my daughter with her 6 grade homework and violin for a few months. The creative and fun activities Phoebe did with my daughter has kept her interested. Phoebe was also able to pick up the problem areas and work on them, my daughter's school grade has improved greatly. My daughter really enjoyed the time spent with Phoebe, and we all appreciate her support and encouragement. I believe Phoebe will be my daughter's tutor/mentor for a long time.
I have spent the last few months working with Phoebe on my applications to medical school and I cannot thank her enough for all the essays she has helped proofread for me. I worked with her around the clock to complete close to 50 essays. I can confidently say she is absolutely amazing at what she does. She helped me brainstorm ideas, alter the language of my writing, and correct all grammatical errors. She helped me transform dull and generic essays to stories that really let my personality and the message I was trying to convey shine. She went out of her way to edit the essays whenever I needed them and she was always quick and proficient with her edits. I am certain that without her help I would not have received the number of interview invitations I did. I could not have asked for a better tutor. Thank you Phoebe, you're awesome!
I just recently worked with Phoebe on my college essays. She was extremely helpful and we were able to accomplish a lot in a short amount of time. Going into the sessions I had no confidence in my essays, but after we patched them up together they looked great. Phoebe really knows what to write about for essays and can help you when your having writers block. She is also really kind and very patient. I look forward to working with her again.
You can feel Phoebe's enthusiasm when you meet her. She is also a smart, dedicated and very effective teacher. Our high schooler has had two sessions with Phoebe so far to work on essay writing skills. And she is already gaining confidence and learning how to effectively outline and discover her own writing voice. We are very fortunate to have found Phoebe!
Phoebe has helped me transform an essay I wrote for my English class to a college application essay. She helped me incorporate many ideas I didn't believe I could have included in the essay, and the essay turned out to be very strong. She was very patient as we made changes to the essays along the way. She's been such a big help to me!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
For most students, I recommend the ACT over the SAT.
I use a very no-nonsense approach to preparing for the ACT, and use methods similar to those explained in my subject description for the SAT. I offer many tips and tricks that are not usually taught about the test. I try to keep sessions regarding standardized testing lively and make them as fun and digestible as possible, as I understand any test prep can be difficult and stressful. I try to switch the roles sometimes when prepping for the ACT in order to make the experience truly rewarding and effective. Sometimes the best way to learn is to teach! If there is ever a question about the test I am unable to answer, I will always research it for my student. Studying for any standardized test is a team effort between the teacher and student.
Regarding ACT essays: I use a very effective, methodical, intentional essay system and can guarantee a score of a 10-12 on an ACT essay for most students that use my approach.
I am a professional cover letter editor. Successful cover letters are very similar to effective essays and effective college essays, and I do EXTREMELY successful cover letter coaching and editing because of this fact.
I have edited resumes for many clients and am able to transform a relatively dull resume into something with great potential to help someone get hired. I am adept at (aesthetically!) organizing information, emphasizing an individual's strengths, and altering the language of a resume to make it more assertive, varied, and precise.
I'm also fantastic at helping prepare for job interviews! Talking points, personal anecdotes, prioritizing information concisely, confidence pointers, motivation, drilling--you name it and I'll drastically improve your shot at that job!
College/Grad School Application Essays:
These essays are NOT like ANY kind of writing students usually do in school, and most of the time students are going about their college essays the wrong way. I am extremely skilled at not only helping a student create the kind of essay colleges are looking for, but also doing it in such a way as to draw out the student's unique voice, which is really what schools are hoping to see.
I'm very different from a typical college counselor who may know what colleges are looking for in an admissions essay. First of all, since working with students on essays--as well as editing--is my full-time profession, I have many writing-specific skills at my disposal that counselors do not. Secondly, as a writer myself, with a rich literature background, I can help a student create not only an emotionally impacting, true-to-self piece of art, but also one that incorporates quite impressive, elevated metaphorical content.
I have an almost unreal level of success assisting students with college essays that accomplish a very difficult task in the application process. I am also adept at simplifying the SAT and ACT and ensuring success with college applications. Please see my testimonials for much more on this topic.
General College Counseling:
I am the former president of the Smith College Club of Orange County, so I have conducted multiple interviews for prospective students and generally have a very good understanding of how the admissions and selection process works.
College Interview Preparation:
I have conducted several interviews for prospective students as the president of the Smith Club, so I very literally know what interviewers are looking for!
I am simply stellar at offering life advice. I am currently working on my own leadership program for teens, as I feel the public school counseling system is almost completely dilapidated and ineffective. Please talk to me about this. Get to know even a little bit about my passion for helping people--especially teenagers--and you'll see that it exists in a goldmine of energy, resources, and empathy. That is not a metaphor I use lightly!
I just spent the past 8 months at an academy for elementary school students. During my time there, I taught CST prep, reading comprehension, writing, and math. I have had 40 or more students and have improved each of their conversational abilities, vocabulary, desire to learn, and much more.
I am a Smith College alumna with a degree in literature and an English high school teaching license. At Smith I was the recipient of a Dana Teaching Grant scholarship and was featured in the Smith Alumnae Quarterly, as well as the school newspaper, for my teaching personality and dedication to the practice. I have copious experience teaching children, adolescents, and adults in a huge variety of settings--I've headed and assisted with classroom and program pedagogy regarding dystopian literature, modern-world Hamlet interpretations, and proofreading skills, to name a few. My various assignments have allowed me to work with all ages of students, preschool through adult.
As a tutor, I am adept at working with students of all ages taking all manner of English classes. I have worked with students in beginning writing classes, advanced writing classes, typical high school language arts classes, intro to literature college classes, AP Language and Composition, AP Literature and Composition, and more.
I have worked with several private ESL students over the years and have also taught 45+ students at Reading Town, a local ESL academy. Indeed, reading activities are one of the best ways to engage students in the process of language acquisition, and I believe in genuine, interesting learning experiences.
One of my most memorable ESL teaching experiences came in the form of a 4th grade international student. She advanced hugely under my tutelage and became much more confident in her usage of language and overall presentation.
What can I possibly say about a part of me that is so deeply-rooted and profound? I adore grammar and correcting it, but I am no proverbial 'grammar Nazi.' I feel like that term gets tossed around way too much with something similar to flagrant disregard. I am a grammar purist in that I respect the most basic and oft-overlooked idea behind grammar--that communication should be effective and precise, and without correct grammar, we present half-baked and sometimes incorrect, unpolished ideas to the world we are trying so desperately to engage with.
I am fortunate enough to have grammar be such an intrinsic part of me that I immediately know how to correct any and all sentences, and I attribute this in part to endless reading during my youth.
I am currently developing a grammar system for my students that makes grammar real and approachable instead of something archaic learned through overwrought rules that not only confuse but leave much humanity to be desired.
If you need to know anything more about my qualifications, I believe my reviews for and subject descriptions regarding my editing work speak for themselves.
One of my favorite t-shirts says "Let's eat grandma" and then "Let's eat, grandma! Punctuation saves lives." Enough said. :)
The realm of literature and all it contains is my forte and great joy. I teach people to analyze, appreciate, write--and revel in our shared humanity. Language arts, English, literature--whatever you want to call it--is all a study of the human condition itself, and nothing is more powerful than that.
Editing is one of my favorite things to do, and I am extremely proficient at furthering any student's writing. I consider myself to be the best editor I have ever encountered, and I have encountered many. I am extremely quick, efficient, and insightful, and I always have direct and beneficial feedback. Editing is a form of magic to me, and I wield many wands.
I currently edit primarily:
-college/graduate school application essays
-academic papers for college and grad school students
-essays and creative writing assignments for high school and middle school students
-resumes and cover letters
-a Random House manuscript
-a fantasy novel
I am a licensed teacher. Because of this credential and the countless associated internships, practicums, and seminars I have partaken in, I am a very strong public speaker. In a classroom, one has to be clear, direct, and exhibit appropriate enthusiasm, all of which occur with my speaking. I also have had countless leadership experiences in which I needed to speak publicly. For example, in a sports setting, one's voice has to carry far to reach everyone spaced out in a large space such as a gym, and I would speak at fencing meetings and tournaments. When leading a board meeting--as I did for my community service council and theatre organization--one has to employ good communication and organization skills, keeping the dialogue everyone contributes to paced. I have spoken many times in these settings and innumerable more. It would be the utmost pleasure for me to help others with their public speaking, especially considering that it is a skill so many lack. Having even one individual who believes wholly in a student's potential to be a great speaker makes all the difference in the world!
Over the years, in my preparation to work with SAT students, I have exposed myself to lesser-known aspects of the test. This requires continuous personal research and discussion with colleagues, all of which is done in an effort to stay ahead of the curve and give my students creative, to-the-point ways to approach the test (and, furthermore, any intimidating standardized test). This aside, I encourage my students to think critically about the test and yet to not overthink what the test requires of them. Toeing this line is difficult but rewarding. Luckily, the SAT is quite repetitive in what it tests, and after students become familiar with enough problems, they begin to see and understand these patterns, which allows them to be successful.
I use a very effective, methodical, intentional essay system and can guarantee a score of a 10-12 on an SAT essay for most students that use my approach.
It takes between 6 and 15 writing-only sessions, on average, for a student to learn, practice, and be successful with my method in regard to essays.
When grammatical issues in writing need to be addressed, this is done using a combination of book and non-book exercises.
I routinely help all my students with their study skills, so it simply makes sense that I be certified. I stress organization and time management and consider myself adept at instilling these both in children and teenagers alike. I believe that time management and prioritization skills are among the most important things an individual can develop for him or herself, and I stress their importance to students in many ways--including, but by no means limited to, self-efficacy, independent work, structured lessons, and neverending encouragement--and expectations.
I have performed in various theatrical circuits as an actor, but my most valuable theatrical experience came in the form of a theatre collaborative, whereby each member of the group led everyone in theatrical activities and theory. It ensured I have the ability to theatrically teach and inspire.
I have also completed a Shakespearean teaching internship, so I am particularly skilled at making Shakespeare something accessible to younger students.
I have played violin for 15 years. I am currently the fiddle player for an established punk rock band, and I have loads of performance experience in a variety of venues; I have been in countless orchestras, chamber groups, quartets, bands, and rock/cover music groups of various genres. I have played internationally as well as in many places on the east coast. I have been a violin teacher at Yamaha Music the past year as well.
I have had at least 15 private violin and viola students over the past 2 years and in different states. I have worked with children of all ages and with adults at a variety of different levels--some are just beginning to learn and some are proficient. I most enjoy working with the beginners because I introduce them to my system of learning violin and give them the encouragement (and high energy) needed to stick it out through the frustration of beginning to learn any difficult instrument! I have very high expectations for my students, and practice is one of their cornerstones. My goal with my violin teaching is to always inspire and teach others to feel the profound joy in and of music.
I am an extremely effective writing coach, providing fantastic encouragement, structure, and support. I regularly guide my students in the process of writing their own perfect papers until they have mastered the process.
I will say this: there is truly NOTHING in the world like the feeling of gratification, happiness, and excitement I get when I, time and time again, pinpoint what needs to be done with an essay and help my student make it happen.
Nothing in the world.
Teaching writing skills and coaching my students in the writing process is truly my calling, and it brings me great fulfillment; because of this, I am sustained and highly effective in my work with all writing students, regardless of age and circumstance. I have edited and/or assisted with every kind of writing there is, whether academic or creative.
