I am an experienced middle and high school educator with more than 20 years of classroom teaching experience. I hold a B.S. in Animal Physiology and Neuroscience from UC San Diego and a Master of Arts in Education with a specialization in Educational Technology from National University. Throughout my career, I have taught students in grades 6–12, with extensive experience in mathematics and science. My tutoring areas include middle school math and science, Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, and high school biology, including AP Biology.

I spent the past 13 years teaching at a college-preparatory school in Irvine, California, where I taught math, science, and leadership courses and worked closely with students with a wide range of learning styles and academic abilities. Before that, I taught for six years at another college-preparatory school in San Diego. In addition to classroom teaching, I have worked with students individually and in small groups to reinforce concepts, prepare for assessments, complete challenging assignments, and build stronger study and problem-solving skills.

My tutoring approach is patient, encouraging, and highly individualized. I believe students learn best when they understand why a method works rather than simply memorizing steps. I break difficult concepts into manageable pieces, ask questions to identify where understanding breaks down, and adjust my explanations until the material makes sense to the student. My goal is not only to help students succeed on their next assignment or test, but also to build their confidence and give them strategies they can use independently in the future.

Approved Subjects

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I have more than 20 years of experience teaching middle and high school students, including extensive experience teaching mathematics. I help Algebra 1 students understand equations, inequalities, functions, graphing, systems of equations, exponents, polynomials, and quadratic equations. My approach emphasizes understanding why algebraic methods work rather than simply memorizing steps, and I break difficult problems into manageable pieces. I am patient and encouraging and adapt my explanations to each student's needs, whether they are struggling with foundational concepts or looking to strengthen their skills and confidence.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

I have more than 20 years of experience teaching middle and high school students, including extensive experience teaching mathematics. I help Algebra 2 students understand concepts including functions, polynomial and rational expressions, equations and inequalities, exponential and logarithmic functions, radicals, systems of equations, and sequences and series. My approach is patient and step-by-step, with an emphasis on helping students understand why a method works rather than simply memorizing procedures. I also help students identify gaps in foundational algebra skills that may be making more advanced concepts difficult. My goal is to build both mathematical understanding and confidence so students can become more independent problem solvers.
Biology

Biology

I have more than 20 years of experience teaching middle and high school students, including extensive experience teaching science. I earned my B.S. in Animal Physiology and Neuroscience from UC San Diego, where I developed a strong academic foundation in biology and the life sciences. I help students understand topics including cell structure and function, genetics, evolution, ecology, cellular respiration and photosynthesis, molecular biology, and human physiology. My approach is patient and concept-focused, helping students understand how biological processes work and how different concepts connect rather than relying solely on memorization. I also help students interpret diagrams and data, develop effective study strategies, and prepare for quizzes and exams.
Geometry

Geometry

I have more than 20 years of experience teaching middle and high school students, including extensive experience teaching mathematics. I help Geometry students understand concepts including angles, triangles, polygons, similarity, congruence, circles, coordinate geometry, area, volume, and the Pythagorean Theorem. I also help students develop the logical reasoning and problem-solving skills needed to understand geometric proofs. My approach is patient and step-by-step, with an emphasis on helping students understand the reasoning behind a solution rather than simply memorizing formulas and procedures.
Physical Science

Physical Science

I have 20 years of classroom teaching experience, including teaching middle school science, and hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Physiology and Neuroscience from UC San Diego. My teaching background includes helping students understand fundamental scientific concepts, develop critical thinking skills, and apply scientific principles to real-world situations. I specialize in breaking down challenging material into clear, manageable steps and adapting my instruction to meet each student's individual learning needs. My goal is to help students build confidence, strengthen their understanding of physical science, and succeed in their coursework.
Physics

Physics

I have 20 years of classroom teaching experience in math and science, including experience teaching Physics. I hold a B.S. in Animal Physiology and Neuroscience from UC San Diego and an M.A. in Education. My background in both math and science allows me to help students understand not only the physics concepts but also the algebra and mathematical reasoning needed to solve problems successfully. I have experience teaching topics such as motion, velocity and acceleration, forces and Newton’s laws, energy, momentum, waves, and electricity. I focus on breaking complex problems into clear, manageable steps and helping students understand the reasoning behind the equations rather than simply memorizing formulas. My goal is to help students improve their problem-solving skills, succeed in their physics course, and become more confident with the material.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

I have more than 20 years of experience teaching middle and high school students, including extensive experience teaching middle school mathematics. I help students build a strong foundation in prealgebra concepts such as fractions, decimals, ratios, proportions, percents, equations, inequalities, and graphing. My approach focuses on breaking challenging concepts into manageable steps and helping students understand why a method works rather than simply memorizing procedures. I am patient and encouraging, and I adapt my explanations to each student's individual learning style.

Great teacher!

My son has been struggling with his algebra 2 and trig honor class and he asked for a tutor. We found Alan from Wyzant and reviewed his ratings. Current experience with Alan has been pretty good. Alan is very supportive and very responsive whenever we request urgent changes and whatever we ask. My son likes his tutoring sessions so far.

Excellent tutor

Alan was very patient. The lesson helped my son catch up on the parts where he didn’t fully understand at school. My son had a math quiz today, and he said the lesson really helped him feel more prepared and confident at it.

Great Teacher, very detailed oriented.

My daughter has only had 1 session so far and she felt like Alan helped her understand the material in ways that she didn’t understand before. I can only imagine with more lessons what the fruits of her labor from working with him will be.
