I am an American Sign Language (ASL) instructor who has taught at Irvine Valley College (IVC) since 2019 and have served as an assistant professor for nearly 10 years. As a Deaf native signer, I bring an authentic, lived understanding of ASL and Deaf culture into my teaching. I have also worked with Sorenson Communications, assisting with installing videophone systems and teaching users how to operate the devices. This experience has strengthened my ability to support real-world communication between Deaf and hearing individuals by helping clients understand the technology, features, and practical use of videophone systems in everyday and professional settings.
My teaching approach is interactive, visual, and student-centered. I focus on helping students understand ASL as a complete language rather than memorizing isolated signs. I emphasize natural communication, including facial expressions, body language, grammatical structure, and conversational flow. I adapt my lessons to each student’s age, goals, and learning style, whether they are learning ASL for school, work, personal interest, or communication with Deaf family members and friends.
In addition to teaching ASL and supporting communication technology through Sorenson, I enjoy incorporating creativity and engagement into my lessons. One of my hobbies is performing magic tricks, which I sometimes use as a fun and visual way to help students remember vocabulary and concepts. My goal is to create a supportive and encouraging learning environment where students feel comfortable practicing, making mistakes, and building confidence in their ASL skills.
