It wasn’t until a teaching assistant took time out of her day to explain a history concept I didn’t understand and help me ace a test that I truly came to appreciate the value of guidance from someone skilled at explaining complex ideas. It wasn’t until a teaching assistant took time out of her day to explain a history concept I didn’t understand and help me ace a test that I truly came to appreciate the value of guidance from someone skilled at explaining complex ideas. Since then, I've strived to help others in the same way that she helped me, using the subjects I am strongest in.
I've always enjoyed math, as numbers has been the language I've always understood the most. In high school, I began my tutoring journey by tutoring people on the math portion of the SAT through a website. Through highly structured lesson plans, I was able to connect and support my groups of around 10 children through multiple practice tests and many more practice questions over the course of eight 75 minute sessions, with the bootcamp lasting 4 weeks total. In the mornings at school, I began to tutor underclassmen who needed help in their algebra classes, and learned how to break down these concepts into digestible chunks for them.
Tutoring helped fuel my passion for math, along with the AP courses I was taking. I scored well on both of the math AP exams I've taken, with a 5 in AP Statistics and a 4 in AP Calculus BC (5 on my AB subscore). Now, I am pursuing an applied and computational mathematics degree, as well as a minor in statistics. Though I am not pursuing in a degree in education, I love helping others learn and hope to help them learn to love math as I do.
