My degree in Psychology and background in counseling coupled with 14 years of experience working with students of all abilities has helped me be able to guide students to be the best versions of themselves. It all started when I became a parent to a child that had learning challenges. When the schools tried to convince me that my child was not going to be able to keep up with the other students and that I should consider a placement with students that would eventually lead to a Certificate of Completion, I knew my child was more capable than what the schools thought and I went into action. I learned everything about teaching students who learn differently from Lindamood Bell and through my work with students with special needs, I learned the ABA techniques to teach students on the Autism spectrum. I was able to teach my child to discover what helps them learn the best and advocate for themselves in the classroom. My child not only graduated with a High School Diploma, but is now attending California State University at Fullerton and is on track to graduate with a Bachelor's Degree.
I believe that all students have the capacity to learn, this doesn't mean that all students will excel in academics, instead my goal is to help each and every student to discover what helps them and motivates them to learn. School can be an intimidating place for students who learn differently and part of the challenges that students face is that there is not enough hours in the school day for students to learn everything that is expected of them. The way I approach each student is that we first figure out what is working for them and what is not. It's not just saying "I don't like a particular subject" we work on what aspects of the subject is difficult and why. Through this process we are able to work on what aspects we can work on together and what tools they can learn so that they are able to be more confident. Through this process, the students learn how to be more resilient which helps them be more successful.
