Hi, I’m Jacob. I am a part-time college student who is working towards a computer science and mathematics degree. I have taken and passed Calculus I, II, and III. I am also knowledgeable about computer science principles and have experience writing C, C++, and x86 Assembly. Currently, I have been employed as an after-school high school tutor through the YMCA for about two years.
Growing up, I’ve always had a passion and fundamental understanding of math that I credit my amazing teachers for fostering. However, I’ve had some teachers who lack clarity and explanation within their lessons, so I recognize some teaching faults that hinder students. I realized I had a knack for tutoring when I would help out my group in my AP Calculus class by explaining theorems and concepts we learned in class in further detail. I understand that every student learns at their own pace and has preferences when solving problems. I try to break down lessons into concepts needed to solve problems and move to simpler models to explain why things work the way they do. I make sure to reassure students that learning is a process, and there is no shame in going back to the basics, like using number lines or multiplying/dividing by hand.
