About Randy

There are few thing more important than education and as a credentialed teacher I have seen the impact it can have on students lives. Yet, the classroom teachers oftentimes find themselves stretched too thin. I have been one of those teachers. I taught a year in a classroom where over 75% of my students were below grade level in reading because of decisions made in the best interest of school district rather than the students. That experience solidified for me the need for students to have caring educators who can, and will, take the time to not only teach them the material that will be on the test but also help them discover how they learn best.

I wear a lot of hats. I am a husband, father, student, and teacher. I hold a BA in History and Political Science, as well as a MA in Education and Teaching Credential. Currently, I am pursuing a MA in Philosophy. I worked as an in-home tutor for 7 years prior to receiving a teaching credential and have completed four years of classroom teaching spanning both public and private schools. As a tutor, I've worked with students as young as six as well as sophomores in college. As a teacher, I have taught, courses for students in grades 6-12.

I love to work with students one on one or in small groups. I see the education process as less about the teacher imparting knowledge to the students and more as a relationship in which I have the opportunity to empower students by teaching them the character and skills they will need to be confident as life-long learners. My goal when I teach is to make the material relevant to the student learning while teaching them the skills of hard work they will need no matter what they choose to pursue in the future.

Outside of work and school I love to garden, fish, read, and generally just learn. In fact, I have instituted (much to my daughter's chagrin) Documentary Day. On Documentary Day, usually around 10 am on Saturdays, we watch a documentary (usually negotiated between my daughter and I). I make it a point to get to know my students and desire to be known by them. It's difficult to learn when you don't know who you're learning from.

Thanks for reading this. I hope you have got the feel for who I am and how I like to teach. I look forward to hearing from you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

This is an area of great interest to me. So much so that religion was my minor in college. During my time in school I took seven religion classes at a private Christian University. I thoroughly enjoy the topic and have read through the Bible twice. Serious study of the Bible and theology in there historical contexts is an ongoing hobby of mine. If you have any questions regarding my knowledge or theology please feel free to email me via Wyzant and I will be more then happy to address your question.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have extensive experience working with younger students. While taking education classes I did 20 hours of "observation" in a second grade after school program. While there I assisted students with homework as well as aided the regular instructor in other areas. I have also worked with students as young as six, helping them in both reading and writing as well as math and science. In addition to the above mentioned I have worked in various areas with 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th graders at various times in all areas of study. Generally for this age group I like to provide homework help. However I will focus on a specific area of study if that is what the student requires.

Geometry

It was tutoring geometry for and independent study high school which led me to make the decision to become a teacher. I love helping students to understand a subject which we often use without even knowing it. Oftentimes geometry is intimidating to people but I do not believe that it has to be we just need to look at it a little differently and then it will all make sense.

Political Science

I hold a BA in History and Political Science and have done a semester's worth of teaching in 12th-grade government class

Religion

My minor in my undergrad was religion. As a teacher I spent my first two years teaching Apologetics as well as Church History and World Religion, both of which were UC approved courses. Additionally, I am currently attending Talbot Theological Seminary which requires courses in theology, biblical studies, as well as comparative religions.

Social Studies

I received a BA in History and Political Science from Vanguard University with a minor in Religion. I also hold MA in Education in the single subject area of social studies. I enjoy the field of Social Studies and have taught World History, Ancient History, US History, and Church History / World Religions. I have also tutored 4th grade-college including regular social studies grades 4-8 the various histories and geography 9-11 as well as government and econ for 12th grade.
