Hi all, I'm Jake! I graduated Summa Cum Laude from California State University Maritime Academy with a degree in mechanical engineering & minor in mathematics. Currently, I work at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory as a mechanical engineer, and will be working through a Masters of Engineering degree at UC Berkeley. To be frank, I wasn’t considered one of the gifted students early on in my schooling; having been diagnosed with ADHD at a young age, I had to struggle to get through my classes. During my college years, I was extremely fortunate to go to a college with small classroom sizes, so I could receive a lot of individual attention from my professors, and I was able to ask any question I wanted. Despite its difficulty, I became more passionate about mechanical engineering because of my attentive professors and thrived as a result. Due to my newfound passion, I decided to give tutoring a try; first as a volunteer for local middle schools during my sophomore year, and then for two more years for my college’s tutoring center.

I have several years of overall tutoring experience - the bulk of which is in calculus, physics, chemistry, and mechanical engineering courses - and I have worked with many students one-on-one who come from a variety of different learning types, backgrounds, and experiences. I have also led study groups with nearly a dozen students at any given time for any of the previously mentioned subjects. There were students that already did well in their classes and simply needed a second set of eyes, students who were struggling to pass, and anywhere in between. Wherever you fall on that range, I’m here to help.

I hope that I can use my previous experiences to help you reach or exceed your academic goals. If you think I would be a good fit for your tutoring needs, please feel free to reach out to me with any questions or schedule a lesson with me!

Approved Subjects

Calculus

Calculus

Tutored calculus 1, 2, 3, and differential equations in college for 2 years.
Differential Equations

Differential Equations

I tutored differential equations for several students during my senior year at college. I have taken a few classes that apply the math taught in my Diff-EQ's course including mechanical vibrations, control theory, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer.
Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical Engineering

I graduated as Summa Cum Laude in mechanical engineering last year and tutored several students taking upper-division & lower-division M.E. courses. Some examples include statics, MATLAB, dynamics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and more. I studied for the FE exam after graduation and passed it to obtain my Engineer in Training (EIT) license. I am currently working at Lawrence Livermore National Lab (LLNL) supporting the Nuclear Materials Engineering group, working on inter-disciplinary projects and applying the principles learned in college.
Physics

Physics

Tutored Engineering Physics 1, 2, as well as circuits, statics, dynamics, and thermodynamics.
Precalculus

Precalculus

Tutored calculus 1, 2, 3, and differential equations for the CSU Maritime tutoring center, volunteered for the Hayward public library as a teen tutor for different math classes.
