Experienced Math Teacher 34+ Years | Algebra through AP Calculus

I have spent more than 34 years teaching mathematics at the high school level, working with students across a wide range of courses from Algebra through AP Calculus. I also taught calculus for two years at the junior college level. I hold a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Seattle Pacific University and a Master of Arts in Mathematics from San Francisco State University.

Over the course of my teaching career, I worked with students with very different learning styles, confidence levels, and academic goals. Some students needed help strengthening foundational skills, while others were preparing for advanced coursework, AP exams, or college-level mathematics. My approach has always been to meet students where they are, identify the specific concepts causing difficulty, and explain those concepts in a clear and manageable way.

I believe that success in mathematics comes from understanding why a method works, not simply memorizing steps. During tutoring sessions, I focus on helping students develop strong problem-solving skills, recognize patterns, and build the confidence to work through problems independently. I am patient, thorough, and comfortable explaining the same idea in multiple ways until it makes sense.

I can assist students with Algebra I and II, Geometry, Trigonometry, Precalculus, Calculus, AP Calculus AB and BC, and college-level calculus. I am also happy to help with homework, test preparation, reviewing difficult material, filling gaps from previous courses, or providing additional instruction for students who want to get ahead.

After decades in the classroom, one of the most rewarding parts of teaching has been seeing a student go from feeling frustrated or intimidated by mathematics to realizing that they can understand it. My goal as a tutor is not only to help students improve their grades, but also to help them become stronger, more confident mathematical thinkers.
