I graduated from Harvard University in 1988 with a degree in U.S. History, earned a teaching certification from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and later completed a Master's degree in Speech Communication and Instruction at the University of Washington. My teaching career began in private and international schools in Kenya, Tanzania, France, and Italy before I spent most of my career in U.S. public schools. I have taught English (grades 7–12), Debate, U.S. History (including APUSH), World History, International Studies, and AP Comparative Government. I particularly enjoy helping students connect literature and history, as each enriches understanding of the other. I hold National Board Certification in Social Studies, a Special Education endorsement, and have extensive training in AVID strategies that support study skills, organization, and academic success. I also value the artistic and developmental approach of Waldorf education, having spent a year teaching in a Waldorf school.
I tutor students in person in Marin County and online. Having taught and tutored online for many years, I am comfortable working with students in a virtual setting and adapting instruction to individual learning styles and needs. I offer support in SAT preparation, English, History, AP Comparative Government, writing, and public speaking. As I transition from full-time classroom teaching to retirement, I have a flexible schedule and enjoy giving students the individualized attention that helps them build confidence, strengthen skills, and achieve their academic goals.

American History

American History

In 30 years of teaching, more than half has included American History and Literature. The fact that I teach both the literature (including speeches and rhetoric) along with the history enhances student engagement. I believe my time teaching outside the US also helps to bring a balanced perspective to this traditional coursework.
United States History

United States History

I graduated with a BA in US History from Harvard University in 1988, with a minor in African History. I have taught US History and International Studies, often combined with literature or English, for 31 years. While I am retiring from full time work in schools, I still enjoy working with students part time.
