Nice to meet you! I'm Kris, and I am a published molecular biologist and STEM education researcher. I am a college biology instructor and NSF research fellow at UC Santa Barbara.
Part of my job as a STEM education researcher is staying up-to-date on the most recent advances in teaching techniques. Specifically, I am an expert in the best ways to teach biology. I have applied this knowledge as the introductory biology instructor at UC Santa Barbara and over my 5+ years of college-level teaching positions. I have experience teaching Scientific Writing, Biology Laboratory Science, Botany, Neurology, Genetics, Genomics, Animal Behavior, Microbiology, Bioinformatics, and Biostatistics, and the expertise to teach many others. Within biology, I currently research epigenetics, which is a subfield of genetics.
I believe in using evidence-based teaching methods, so I incorporate the most recent education research advances in my tutoring practice. Research shows that students learn best when their teachers are engaged, positive, and patient while still asking students to hold themselves to high standards. It also shows that all students are capable of learning complex subjects with enough time and meaningful, structured practice.
Although I currently teach undergraduates, I have tutoring experience at the high school and middle school level. I take a special pride in teaching students who currently feel excluded from STEM disciplines, learners from diverse backgrounds, and unconventional learners. Whoever you are, I will approach your learning process according to the current best practices in addressing your specific goals and learning needs.
I am working to transition my previous tutoring plans, lessons, and schedule to Wyzant. I do have a 12 hour cancelation notice so that I can remain fair to other clients by offering them cancelation slots.
