Over the last six years, I have worked as a private tutor, a high-school English teacher, a university teaching assistant, and as a grant writer for an educational non-profit organization. My teaching abilities have become quite dynamic from this varied experience, and I would love to put my experience to use in the service of helping you to improve your academic skills. I love the classroom, but I truly appreciate being able to spend one-on-one time with students. Tutoring is, in my opinion, one of the best ways to learn.

As a language arts teacher, I am passionate about literature, history and art but I particularly love to help students with writing. I am currently employed as a grant writer and I also contribute content to several blogs. I have taught writing in many different capacities and I always enjoy the process. I have helped young children to write creatively. I have assisted middle school and high school students with essay composition. I have instructed college students with more advanced essays and I have also been editing and proofreading college entrance applications and resumes at an educational non-profit for 5 years. Anything I can do to guide a student in finding their voice is my pleasure!

After all these years of teaching and tutoring, it has become apparent to me that most academic problems, especially writing, stem from a lack of confidence rather than an inherent inability to learn. Therefore, my first priority with all students is to build trust, rapport, and to provide them with positive feedback. No matter how unstructured or scattered, I enjoy hearing the ideas of my students, and I enjoy watching their creativity flourish as they gain confidence in their abilities. I will do my best to understand where my students are struggling and will work with them at their own pace to meet their potential.

It is my intention as a teacher and tutor to cultivate sensitivity, encouraging my students to find truth for themselves and to become expert in the expression of their unanswered questi

Anthropology

Anthropology

I earned my BA in cultural anthropology from California State University Northridge. For this degree, I was required to take physical anthropology classes, which included laboratory hours studying primate and human anatomy. However, my real expertise is in the realm of cultural attributes, including religion, art, magic, food and ritual.
Art History

Art History

Art history, in my mind, goes hand-in-hand with having any comprehensive knowledge of general history. I have a passion for studying human cultures all over the world and art is one of my favorite perspectives from which to examine historicity. I love living in Los Angeles because we are lucky enough to have many magnificent museums through which we can enjoy a great wealth of artistic achievements from throughout the centuries! I began taking college level art history courses when I was 16 years old and I would love to tutor in this subject. I earned a silver medal in Art History in my high school's academic decathlon in my junior year, but decided to pursue cultural anthropology when I began college.
Bible Studies

Bible Studies

As an elementary student, I attended a private religious school where the Bible was taught as a subject. Since that time, I have pursued academic and personal interests in literature and art history, which requires one to be aware of Biblical allusion. When I was teaching literature in a public high school, I taught many lessons which pertained to the Bible for the purpose of deeply understanding historical and cultural context.
CBEST

CBEST

I have taken and passed the CBEST with flying colors! The CBEST must be passed by anyone who seeks to get a teaching credential in the state of California. I studied for it with many classmates and I am familiar with all that it requires. I believe I could help anyone to pass this test without issue.
Classics

Classics

I have a master's degree in humanities, which requires that the student immerse themselves in at least a sampling of classical knowledge. In addition, I am a credentialed language arts teacher which requires that I be able to teach seminal literature. I am particularly partial to the following works: Gilgamesh; The Illiad; The Odyssey; and The Metamorphosis.
Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

I have tutored children of all ages, from Kindergarten to 6th grade. In addition, when I was a student teacher at Los Cerritos Middle School, I taught 6th grade English and Social Studies. I am very comfortable with young students and know how to make them feel comfortable and confident.
English

English

I have a life-long passion for literature, creative writing, and technical writing. It is always a pleasure for me to help students to explore language arts. I currently have a teaching credential in this subject, and have the most classroom experience with it. I have taught many great novels, plays, and poetry, including: Huckleberry Finn; The Great Gatsby; Frankenstein; the works of Lord Byron; the works of Samuel Taylor Coleridge; and the works of Shakespeare.
Literature

Literature

I have a life-long passion for literature. It is always a pleasure for me to help students to explore a great work of art in literature, whether that be a novel, a short story, a play or a poem. I currently have a teaching credential in language arts, and have the most classroom experience with it. I have taught many great novels, plays, and poetry, including: The Giver; Huckleberry Finn; The Great Gatsby; Frankenstein; the works of Lord Byron; the works of Samuel Taylor Coleridge; and the works of Shakespeare.
Phonics

Phonics

I have taught kindergarten through second-grade students to read using phonics. I believe it is the only method that should be used when teaching reading. It is the most foundational aspect of literacy.
Reading

Reading

I have a life-long passion for reading and literature. It is always a pleasure for me to help students to explore a great story, whether that be a novel, a play or a poem. I love to use literature of any grade-level to enable students to use critical thinking, to meditate upon moral questions, and to determine their own perspectives on life. I currently have a master's degree in humanities and hold a teaching credential in language arts. I have both classroom experience and one-on-one tutoring experience with students of all ages. For new readers, I emphasize phonics, fun stories, and self-esteem building!
Religion

Religion

I have been a teaching assistant in an introduction to World Religions class at the university level. In addition, it has been a long time interest of mine to study religion from anthropological perspectives. I am fascinated by ancient traditions, living traditions such as shamanism, and new religious movements of the 21st century. It is also a personal hobby of mine to read the sacred texts of many traditions, including the Tao Te Ching; The Upanishads; and the Bible.
Social Studies

Social Studies

Social Studies, as defined by the U.S. American National Council for the Social Studies, is the "integrated study of the social sciences and humanities to promote civic competence,". This definition aptly describes my academic background. Cultural Anthropology, the major which I earned my undergraduate degree in, is a social science. The humanities, which is what I have earned a masters degree in, nicely completes the picture of civic competence. To put it succinctly, I love social studies from the local community perspective and the global perspective. I would be an excellent tutor for social studies of any level.
Writing

Writing

I am a gifted technical and creative writer who holds a teaching credential in language arts. I also assist recent high school graduates with college essays and resumes. I have been helping people to fine tune their writing and find their voice for a long time. Helping people with their writing is one of my favorite things to do!
