Experienced ESL Tutor with specialty in grammar, reading, and writing

I am currently attending San Jose State University majoring in Linguistics with an emphasis in TESOL, or Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. I will graduate in December of 2020 with a Bachelors degree in Linguistics, and have my TESOL certificate. I have been tutoring as a volunteer with the Santa Clara County Library Program in Gilroy for 3 years. The student I have been working with has progressed from a sixth grade writing level, and seventh grade reading level to college level English courses. During this time I have learned that you cannot always learn by simply doing drills and memorizing. You need to bring in activities that are interactive to get the student to use as much of the language as possible as they learn, and the student feels they are enjoying the process. Lessons will be planned according to their current level after an assessment has been given. I feel it is important to know what works best in learning environment for the student, and will use these ideas in planning the lessons.

I have been trying to learn Spanish for about five years now, and I do understand the difficulty of learning a new language. I prefer an environment that allows the student to be relaxed and able to study and learn without many distractions. Total immersion is a way of learning that mimics how you learned your primary language. I will use this method as I work with the student to help them learn the new language. I have worked with adults, and would the opportunity to work with children. I am always willing to take on new challenges to improve my ability to teach, and consider it a learning experience for me also. It will be a pleasure to work with you, and help you through this process.
