Have you hit a roadblock in your math studies?

Greetings, Parents and Students!

I would like to express my gratitude to those who have stumbled upon or purposefully sought out this website. Whether you need assistance for an upcoming assessment, want to brush up on concepts, or require long-term or short-term tutoring, you have come to the right place.

My name is Andy, also known as the "Math Magician" by my high school students due to my ability to simplify complex problems. For the past two decades, both teaching and tutoring have been integral parts of my life.

Throughout my career, I have identified three crucial components that are essential in helping students change the way they approach math. These components are the Right Styles, Right Techniques, and Right Mathology.

My goal is not only to help students complete their homework and ace their tests but also to develop their critical thinking skills by asking concise questions, providing constructive feedback, and challenging them with difficult problems to enhance their long-term memory. I believe it is important to point out their mistakes and help them improve upon them.

In my opinion, a great mentor is like a skilled doctor with a solid background and extensive experience in their respective fields. They can diagnose and provide the appropriate treatment on the first or second visit, saving the patient time and money.

At the end of the day, I believe that what matters most is the number of lives I have impacted, not how much money I have or what kind of car I drive.

Cheers,
Andy

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

Algebra 1 is great fun – you get to solve puzzles! You play some computer games by running, jumping or finding secret doors. Well, with Algebra you play with letters, numbers and symbols. And once you learn some of the “tricks”, it becomes a fun challenge to work out how to use your skills in solving each “puzzle”.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

Algebra 2 is an enjoyable, intriguing, and demanding subject as it builds upon the knowledge and techniques acquired in Algebra 1 and Geometry. I have been teaching both Honors and regular Algebra 2 for ten years, and it has been a delightful experience. Throughout my teaching, I have developed numerous shortcuts and techniques to help students memorize formulas, understand how to graph various types of functions, solve specific equations, and efficiently solve word problems.
Calculus

Calculus

I have a proven track record of tutoring students in various calculus courses, including AP Calculus AB/BC, Business Calculus, and Calculus 1, 2, and 3, with high levels of success. When my students take the AP Calculus exam, 80% of them pass with a score of 5, while 20% pass with a score of 4 or 3. I work with college students at a number of institutions, such as CSUF, CSULB, UCI, Fullerton College, San Ana College, Irvine Valley College, Orange Coast College, and Golden West College, to name just a few. Personally, I find great joy in solving math problems, especially calculus problems. What draws me to this subject is the fact that there is always a correct answer, and there are multiple approaches to finding that answer. In contrast, English essays can never be perfect and are never truly finished. I often compare math skills to muscles in the body; if you don't exercise them, you won't see progress. Therefore, practicing regularly is essential for success in calculus.
Differential Equations

Differential Equations

As an undergraduate, I found Differential Equations to be an extremely beneficial and fascinating math course. It begins by defining terminology and mathematical models used in differential equations. The course then covers first-order and higher-order differential equations, as well as methods for solving them and their applications. Additionally, the course delves into modeling with higher-order, Laplace transform, and systems of linear first-order differential equations, concluding with series solutions of linear equations. Throughout the course, numerical methods are taught. I have had the pleasure of tutoring students from CSUF and Santa Ana College for two semesters, and it has been an incredibly rewarding experience for me.
Discrete Math

Discrete Math

I am able to tutor students in an introductory course of discrete mathematics with ease. This course aims to acquaint students with ideas and approaches from discrete mathematics that are commonly applied in science and engineering. I can instruct students on logical and mathematical thinking and how to utilize these strategies to resolve issues. To accomplish this objective, students will gain knowledge in logic and proof, sets, functions, and algorithms, as well as mathematical reasoning. Additionally, the course covers essential topics such as relations, graphs, trees, and formal languages and computability.
Geometry

Geometry

When I first encountered Geometry in high school, I found it to be a completely different experience as it required me to understand the concepts of proofs and how to apply definitions and theorems. Geometry is a visual subject that demands abstract thinking when analyzing shapes and figures. However, after teaching Geometry for ten years, I have grown to enjoy the subject and find it easier than Algebra due to its lack of complex equations. Despite being easier than Algebra, I still recommend that students familiarize themselves with the definitions, axioms or postulates, theorems, and formulas in order to excel in Geometry.
Linear Algebra

Linear Algebra

During my undergraduate studies, I found Linear Algebra to be both intellectually stimulating and immensely practical. Its exploration of vector spaces and linear transformations provided a deep understanding of mathematical structures that extend far beyond lines, planes, and subspaces. What stood out most was its emphasis on universal properties shared across all vector spaces—a perspective that laid a solid groundwork for more advanced topics like Differential Equations. Over the past decade, I’ve had the rewarding opportunity to tutor students in Linear Algebra from surrounding universities and colleges, including online learners. Guiding them through the subject has been a genuinely enjoyable and fulfilling experience.
Logic

Logic

I have developed a high level of comfort and competence in using logical tools to analyze and comprehend arguments, as well as to create my own, thanks to this class. Through the process of becoming familiar with these tools, I have gained a deeper understanding of the art of argumentation, which has allowed me to recognize the underlying structure of the arguments that we encounter in our daily lives, and to evaluate the various elements that contribute to their strength or weakness with greater precision and appreciation.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

Many students find algebra to be a very interesting subject. However, some students find algebra to be very difficult. Often the reason for this is that they have not yet mastered the concepts of pre-algebra. This is why it’s so important to for students to learn pre-algebra thoroughly before moving on to higher levels of math. If students start doing various kinds of math problems early in their studies, they are less likely to encounter problems further down the road. Exponents, arithmetic equations and basic graphing are other primary topics in pre-algebra. These are the pre-algebraic concepts with the widest applications in everyday life. Their applications are almost countless. These concepts of pre- algebra are used in almost every field in business and the sciences. From small-scale business to huge engineering projects, algebra plays a central role in solving problems. If the student wants to have a career in business or the sciences, it’s important that he/she learn pre-algebra as a stepping stone to higher mathematics.
Precalculus

Precalculus

Just like how pre-algebra prepares students for Algebra I, precalculus serves as a preparation for calculus. However, precalculus doesn't directly involve calculus but instead focuses on fundamental topics that will be applied in calculus. When I took precalculus in my final year of high school, I found it to be a challenging and enjoyable course. There are three crucial components of precalculus that I believe every student should be familiar with. Firstly, it's important to know how to represent functions. There are various ways to describe a function, but the most common methods are algebraic and graphical. Secondly, having a grasp on the basic function library can save a lot of time in calculus studies. Basic functions include trigonometric functions, exponential functions, polynomials, and more. Each set of functions has unique properties that make them useful in different ways. Lastly, understanding how to transform functions is key. This involves manipulating a function through shifts, stretches, and compressions to create a new function.
Statistics

Statistics

Overall, I find statistics to be a fascinating and enjoyable subject, particularly in an introductory course where the focus is on gathering, organizing, and analyzing data. Unlike some other math subjects, statistics uses algebra sparingly, so even if you don't consider yourself a math expert, you can still succeed in an introductory statistics course. As a tutor, I have worked with a variety of students, including high school and college students, as well as adult learners who have returned to school to enhance their career prospects. Many of these students have struggled with statistics, especially if they haven't done math in a while. In my tutoring sessions, I aim to help you grasp the underlying theory behind statistical concepts by providing clear and concise step-by-step instructions. By understanding the principles behind the formulas and methods, you will have a deeper comprehension of the subject, which will lead to greater success in your studies. Rather than blindly applying mechanical steps to obtain an answer, you will have a better grasp of the concepts and be able to make sense of the results.
Trigonometry

Trigonometry

Trigonometry is a math concept that I particularly enjoy because it has numerous real-life applications. While some people may find it difficult, I believe this is often due to the fact that they were taught in a manner that didn't suit their learning style. As everyone learns differently, it's important to find a teaching method that works for you. In reality, there are only three crucial definitions in trigonometry, and everything else builds upon those three. If you can understand these three definitions, you should have no trouble understanding any other aspect of trigonometry. These three fundamental definitions are: Sine of the angle = opposite/hypotenuse Cosine of the angle = adjacent/hypotenuse Tangent of the angle = opposite/hypotenuse It's worth noting that trigonometry is not only useful for calculating ratios of right triangle sides, but it also has broader applications in our daily lives. The three trigonometric functions - sine, cosine, and tangent - can help us gain insight into various phenomena. Keep this in mind the next time you encounter these concepts.

The BEST tutor ever!! Brilliant, Patient, and Knows how to teach!

So, I am one of those people who used to breeze through algebra classes by memorizing formulas and doing just enough to pass with an A, then forget everything right after that final test...well, such practice took its toll on me when I took Business Calculus this semester. My weakness from slacking off in algebra started to pull me down along with these new crazy calculus problems my professor would throw at me. After barely making it through my midterms, I decided I couldn't go on anymore without getting some help. At my first session with Andy I immediately knew that he was going to be the one to save me from this pit I was in. We started off slowly with going over some problems I'd missed on my midterms, then after that he'd help me with my homework and extra credit problems. I struggled to learn from basic algebra concepts to abstract calculus problems, but Andy was very patient with me and gave me time to absorb the information calmly. He is very knowledgeable and really knows how to teach. He actually has a real teaching experience--he used to be a high school Math teacher. Whenever we were going through a problem and I'd have a chain of questions, it was amazing to see him explain as if he anticipated all these questions that would pop up in my head. He's talented in explaining abstract math problems in a simple and easy to understand words and is brilliant in making connection between the subjects being learned and the ones that we learnt before. I had so much fun during our sessions because there was so many "Ah-ha!" and light bulb moments. Particularly when I grasped the concept of the triple integrals after a long difficulty trying to understand them, it was exhilarating! I never had so much fun learning math as much as this! I could tell that Andy really loves the subject especially when we're solving tricky extra credit problems (I'm telling you those were real, I mean real brain stretchers) his eyes would light up and boy, the way he solved through those problems as he explained them to me, I'm like speechless! He is extremely smart! Plus, there is no better person to learn from than the person who loves what they're teaching. Some people may laugh at me for fussing over Business Calculus because it's "watered down", but hey it's still all calculus 1,2,3 combined and the class I took was so difficult that half the class dropped out. If it wasn't for Andy I would've been one of those poor souls. Instead here I am, happy with my solid A, writing up this long review for him because I don't know how else to thank him! So to everyone struggling with any levels of Math out there! Take my word, Andy is no doubt a "Math magician" so give yourself a chance to see his magic at work!
