I worked as a community college tutor for one year. I tutored C++ and Java programming and math ranging from elementary arithmetic to multivariable calculus. Working one-on-one with students at a variety of levels gave me practice adjusting my approach to meet the need of each individual. I also took a training course to receive a level 1 CRLA tutor certification. The course taught me about active learning strategies and the role of a tutor: not to lecture the student, but to guide and support their learning process and help them grow into independent learners.
At UCI Irvine I graduated cum laude with a B.S. in mathematics and a B.S. in computer science and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and Pi Mu Epsilon. While I was there I volunteered as a tutor for Math CEO (Community Educational Outreach), an after-school math enrichment program where I paired up with other tutors to provide engaging math lessons to middle schoolers. This taught me the importance of making the subject fun and forming a connection with the students.
I am also qualified to help students prepare for tests. In high school I received a perfect score on the Math portion of the SAT test, and at UCI I placed in the top 200 scorers of the Putnam competition, the preeminent college-level mathematics competition in the US.
After graduation I worked for a few years as a software engineer. The real-world experience working with a team in a large code base and learning new technologies on the fly has given me a perspective that will be valuable in helping students prepare for their future careers.
I look forward to working with students to guide and support them in their learning process, make math or programming fun and engaging, and help them gain deep, foundational understanding in whatever they learn.
