I am an educator with over 25 years of experience teaching and tutoring a diverse community of adult learners. Clients range from young adult to senior citizens. Honored with a merit scholarship, I earned a degree in Mathematics and received the Augustus J. Calloway award for distinguished achievement in the Teacher Preparation program. I hold a Master’s degree in Education and a Certificate in Applied Statistics. I worked formerly as the Assistant Director for Math and Science Test Development for the California High School Exit Exam.

I tutor private clients in the areas of Basic Math, Pre-algebra, Algebra, Geometry, Basic Chemistry, Trigonometry, and Test Prep skills. Many of the individuals with whom I have worked are preparing for tests that are required for academic and professional purposes, such as the TEAS (for nursing school applicants), the GED and the ASVAB pre-military exam. I also assist individuals seeking math help for the IBEW-JATC Electrical and the UA Plumbers and Pipefitters Apprenticeship Pre-Tests.

I believe that it is important to the adult learner to know why they are learning math and how it will benefit them, so I use practical examples and life analogies to help make abstract mathematical concepts more concrete and easy to understand. Students often tell me that they appreciate that I explain concepts clearly and thoroughly, and that I take the time to explain the “why” behind the rules and formulas. I have many helpful tips and shortcuts for solving math problems to share with tutor clients.

Many students have had past experiences with math that were unpleasant, so I think that it is important to establish a safe and non-intimidating learning environment that is conducive for learning. My ultimate goal is to help students feel good about themselves and their competence.
