About Eric

I have over 350 hours worth of experience teaching K-adult students in their homes in various subjects, both privately and through an outside tutoring company. I've been invited to grade over 1,500 essays for the largest essay contest in the country over the last 3 years. I've taught 10th grade World History as a student-teacher and I've been a full-time substitute teacher for over 2 years.

My specialties are philosophy, history, English/writing/grammar/reading comprehension/literature, study skills, and lower level math (anything below Calculus).

AVAILABILITY:

During the 2016-2017 academic year (which ends in June) I normally teach until around 3 or 4 p.m. during the week, I am only able to tutor around my immediate area. On the weekends, I am able to travel anywhere. Overall, I highly prefer to tutor on the weekends.

As of 10/22/16, my schedule is almost completely full, and I must be highly selective with any new students I take on.

EDUCATION:

I have completed a single-subject teaching credential in social studies program. I was an AP/honors student all throughout high school and middle school, and I have a B.A. in philosophy from UC Irvine.

POLICIES:

I live in Fountain Valley and I'm willing to drive to homes and to public places like libraries and coffee shops.

My fee is negotiable depending on distance traveled, frequency of sessions required, subject taught, etc. Generally speaking, if I am asked to regularly tutor a student for an extended period of time, my rate will go down, especially in the case in which I see a student for more than 2 hours a week.

**The first 30 minutes of the very first tutoring session is discounted to some degree.**

OTHER:

I have passed WyzAnt's background check, as well as several other background checks for substitute teaching, student teaching, and previous tutoring jobs.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to send me a message. Thank you.

Once I give you my cell number, feel free to text or call me anytime. I respond very quickly and sometimes respond to texts very late at night. When I am unavailable, my phone is on silent, so you will never wake me up or otherwise disturb me, FYI.

SUBJECTS:

K-Adult: I can tutor philosophy, history (American history, APUSH, European history, world history, etc.), essay-writing, reading, spelling, English, grammar, math before calculus (algebra I and II, geometry, pre-algebra, trigonometry, etc.), religion, test-taking skills, study skills, and virtually any elementary school subject. CBEST/CSETS for social studies are doable considering that I passed the exams and earned A's in all of my courses.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have completed several graduate-level classes that have included means of teaching students with ADD/ADHD in the curriculum. I have worked with a large number of students with ADD/ADHD through tutoring and student teaching. When working with these students, I repeat information and make the material as memorable as possible.

Algebra 1

I've tutored K-12 students with an outside tutoring company in Algebra for almost 100 hours. I try to help students see the origins of algebraic concepts and their real-life uses. I try to encourage conceptual thinking and I focus less on merely showing a student how to complete a particular kind of math problem.

American History

I earned a 4 on the A.P. US History exam, and I earned an A in the course. I have about 40 hours of experience tutoring two students in AP United States History. With my help, one of my students received a 4 on the APUSH exam.

I constantly expand my knowledge of the history of this country in my spare time by watching documentaries and reading various textbooks for fun.

CBEST

I passed the CBEST on my first attempt, and I am experienced in tutoring the various concepts in the test. I own several copies of CBEST study guides in order to offer practice problems to potential students.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have tutored elementary school students for over 150 hours in various subjects with an outside tutoring company. I am currently a substitute teacher in many school districts. I have taught various subjects in a 3rd-5th grade classroom. I am a graduate student almost done with a single-subject teaching credential in social studies.

Elementary Math

I have over 100 hours of experience teaching math to elementary school students. I try to get students to see the real-life origin and application of any mathematical concepts they encounter. I quickly assess their level of ability and push them to work independently at the next level.

English

I have 150 hours of experience teaching English (reading, writing, and speaking) to K-Adult students.

I make sure that students correctly pronounce words while reading and speaking. I always ask students to explain the main ideas of a text orally and via writing in order to check their reading comprehension. Whenever possible, I ask students to edit their essays so that I can track their progress and see what exactly is still lacking in their writing.

ESL/ESOL

Through my graduate classes at Azusa Pacific University, I have learned what is required to teach English Learners. I have helped two Egyptian students with their English skills for over 30 hours. I also have experience helping an adult student with his English conversation skills.

Philosophy

I earned a B.A. in Philosophy at UC Irvine, which is one of the top 30 philosophy programs in the U.S. I've been the founder and president of philosophical clubs in high school and college. I completed a 4 year program outside of college in the fields of advanced philosophy, writing, communication, and thinking.

Phonics

I have taught Phonics in a K-8 classroom through my substitute teaching position. I have also tutored Phonics in previous jobs. I regard it as the best method of teaching a child how to read.

Reading

I've had about 150 hours worth of experience tutoring students in reading.

I love to make sure that students are pronouncing words properly and have good reading comprehension & retention. In order to achieve this, I like to listen to students read aloud, and I ask them to summarize what they read in their own words and writing.

Religion

Through my college and graduate school classes, I am well versed in the history of religions like Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and Buddhism. I taught some elements of Christianity and Judaism while I student taught World History to 150 10th graders.

Social Studies

I am almost done earning a single subject teaching credential in social studies at Azusa Pacific University. I have excelled in social studies my whole life, and they have always been my passion.

Due to my advanced training, I am aware of the value of social studies and common misconceptions, biases, and myths associated with them.

Study Skills

I've taught seven K-12 students how to pass standardized tests for over 100 hours. The average improvement in their test scores was by 15%, and the maximum increase was by 31%.

I try to make academic content personally meaningful for my students in order to make studying more a pleasure and not a chore.

World History

I taught four classes of World History to about 150 high school sophomores for five months. I have also helped a student with special needs pass her World History class at a private school. I try to make the subject as interesting and entertaining as possible.

Writing

I have about 150 hours of experience helping K-college students with their writing. Over the last few years, I have graded over 1,000 essays in the largest essay contest in the United States. During my undergraduate years, I took extracurricular courses in writing and communication taught by professional writers.
