About DICKIE

Greetings!

I have a passion for helping people, and particularly enjoy seeing little ones blossom in their reading and learning skills. It opens up such a new world to them - for life!

However, my experience is not limited to young learners. I also have a passion to help older students as well.

I am very good at English Grammar and Reading. I helped home school my granddaughter in 1st grade, and she ended that year reading in 3rd grade level. I can not take all the credit - she is smart. I have helped dozens of students (of high school and college) write their term papers. Every one made either an A or an A+.

I also help in preparation of tests and learning study skills and time management/organization for all ages.

I have been an instructor in a business school for over 5 years. I have taught several courses. I wrote the lesson plans and instructed Business Ethics and Etiquette courses, so don't be surprised if I throw a piece of etiquette or ethics into our lessons. I have also been a substitute teacher in all grades for 5 years.

I am enthusiastic, caring, dependable, and dedicated to my students, with the mission to help them the best way I can and to bring in parents and teachers to make this a team effort, all for the benefit of the student. I bring a sense of humor with me.

I would like to help you or your child get through whatever difficult times with your studies. My first concern is helping you or your child become better at whatever it is you want to become better, and make the best out of this opportunity to learn. I will require work from you, but you will appreciate it later.

My educational background includes a Bachelors of Science, specializing in Health Care Administration and a minor in Social Sciences. I earned a Masters in Management, more specific Organizational Development and Management / Human Resources. (Say that fast 3 times). I have been a volunteeer instructor for the American Red Cross for many, many years, and that is where I developed my passion to teach.

I enthusiastically look forward to meeting you and working with you. Thank you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Business

I have owned several small businesses over the years. I designed them and completed market analysis. In addition, I set up budgets, managed advertising/marketing, managed all human resources functions. I advertised, recruited, interviewed, hired, trained, and supervised up to 50 employees.

My management style is "Walk the Talk", and in my businesses, I did almost everything. I would not ask my employee to do anything I would not do.

Career Development

I have several years experience in helping people build their career from practicing interviews, writing resumes, building personal skills, and offering career building classes. Times are different now, and one must know what their best way of getting in the door to potential employers.

I would be happy to help you discover your potential and help develop your career potential.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been a substitute teacher for K-6 grades for 5 years. For three of those years, I was requested and accepted a long-term substitute job for 5th grade, to include all subjects.
During those particular times, I set most of the students' daily lesson plans to include most subjects. Each year, those students indicated I was the best substitute teacher they had had. I continue to be a substitute teacher and enjoy the students I spend time with.

In addition to long-term substitutions, I home-schooled my granddaughter for the 1st grade, to include all subjects for that grade. Again, I set daily schedules and lesson plans and worked with her on a daily basis. By the end of that school year, my granddaughter was reading in the 4th grade level.

General Computer

I have been using the "personal computers" since the early 1990's, when I owned a business, utilizing several computers. I first learned the "function keys", and that meant memorizing what each key did (times three as each key did at least two functions, depending on which other key - control or function key, was depressed.

I progressed from the first function key type to "icons", and that was fun. The whole world opened up - but what really opened up was the "Internet" concept, where one could get as much information on anything they want, just by the computer.

I'm familiar with almost everything one uses on a day-to-day basis regarding the computer.

Public Speaking

I am a public speaker and have taught public speaking courses for 6 years to groups of 30. I have the background and knowledge to help you get over the jitters when you need to speak to the boss or to a group of people. Let me help you get past and beyond - to make a great presentation! I'm here to help you succeed!

Study Skills

Study Skills -- this is an important part of all students' education. As a student who has struggled most of her life in high school, I found learning good Study Skills helped me emensely.

To have good Study Skills, one must possess time management, organization, and self-control. Time management and self-control pretty much compliment each other in that in order to have time to go out and have fun, one must have practiced their self-conrol and time management by getting their homework done first.

I will help you learn good Study Skills if this is an area in which you are lacking.

The Best!!!

I hired Dickie to tutor me for my GED and I am so happy that I did. I honestly thought I might be a lost cause. I left high school after 9th grade and that was almost 12 years ago. I have come so far in the last 3 weeks and am 100% confident that I will pass my GED test. She is always available to tutor when I'm free, always on time and has become a great friend. I would recommend her to anyone lo
