During my undergraduate education at Biola University, I was a member of the Torrey Honors College great books program. This program specialized in Socratic seminars, developing critical thinking and writing skills. This afforded me an opportunity to study abroad at Oxford university for a year, furthering my critical thinking skills with one on one tutorials. As such, I have served as the English Department Chair at a High School for over 15 years.

A Tutor Who Listens to My Son and Thoughtfully Draws Out His Ideas
My 13-year-old son worked with Scott on literature throughout the summer. He has a lot of deep thoughts in his mind, but he sometimes finds it difficult to organize and express those thoughts quickly in words. So, finding Scott, who is especially skilled at leading Socratic seminars, was truly a fortunate experience for us. Each week, Scott carefully selected a literary work for my son to read and analyze independently before the lesson. During their sessions, they then engaged in thoughtful and in-depth discussions about the work. Through these conversations, my son learned to look at literature from broader perspectives and, rather than simply reading for the surface meaning, developed the ability to understand and interpret texts more deeply. What I especially appreciated was Scott’s patience. He never rushed my son when he needed extra time to organize his thoughts and express them. Instead, he listened carefully and gave him thoughtful, encouraging feedback that helped him feel more confident about sharing his ideas. Because of this, my son genuinely enjoyed his lessons and had a very meaningful summer of learning. Thanks to Scott, I feel that my son has grown not only in his ability to understand literature, but also in the way he thinks about and understands the world around him. We are truly grateful for the time, patience, and encouragement Scott gave him this summer. I would highly recommend Scott to any student who wants to develop deeper thinking and become more confident in expressing their ideas.
