All Ages / Levels taught:
Jazz, Blues, Rock, Latin, Funk, Folk, Bluegrass, Country, Hindustani, Carnatic, Songwriting, Music Theory, Composition Lessons, Arranging, Soloing, Improvisation, Classical Technique, and much more!

I have been a professional musician all my life working in professional bands all over the world with thousands and thousands of concert performances.

I still perform as the frontman with my 7-piece Jazz standards band "7he Sep7e7" (3 horns + 4-piece rhythm section). I do every single one of the arrangements for the entire band by hand!

I have been continuously teaching music privately for more than 30 years!

I studied music, music theory, counterpoint, composition, and arranging, etc. at Moorpark Community College and at the University of Colorado under the renowned professors Paris Rutherford (Emeritus of Jazz Studies at the University of North Texas), and William Fowler (editor for DownBeat magazine and co-inventor of the Piezo pickup).

I am a published contributor to the #1 best-selling Jazz Theory book on the planet "Jazzology" (published by Hal Leonard - the world's largest music publisher), in addition to having almost 20 books published on the subject of theory and technique!

I also have many many professional recordings to my credit uploaded both on youtube and on my websites that you can listen to online anytime!

Having lived in France (3 years), Switzerland (8 years), and Spain (3 years), besides my native English, I am perfectly fluent in French, German, and Spanish, and I also can teach (and have taught many students) in those languages.

We all learn different ways. Some of us are more visual, some more tactile, some more intuitive, some more cerebral, etc. Understanding this allows me to adapt to each student's most natural mode of learning so that the material is grasped more easily (therefore more quickly), and so that it is retained longer.

I would be honored to share my musical experience and knowledge with you.

Composition (Music)

Composition (Music)

I studied counterpoint, composition, and arranging at university. How to write for horns, voice, and strings. I have plenty of recording that illustrate my compositions only that anyone can hear! ¡Hablo Español! I Teach All Ages, at All Levels: Songwriting, Music Theory, Soloing, Improvisation, Classical Technique, Jazz, Blues, Rock, Latin, Funk, Country, Folk, Hindustani, Carnatic, and much much more! I have been a pro musician all my adult life, teaching thousands of students over a span of more than three decades! I am a published contributor to the #1 best-selling Jazz Theory book "Jazzology" (published by Hal Leonard - the world's largest music publisher), in addition to having almost 20 books published on the subject of theory and technique! I also have many many professional recordings to my credit that you can listen to online anytime! In order to compose music, you need theory. I have authored the following Music Theory books (available on Amazon): "MODALOGY - scales, modes & chords: the primordial building blocks of music" Jeff B. with Schell Barkley 2011 – Hal Leonard publisher Primarily a music theory reference, Modalogy presents a unique perspective on the origins, interlocking aspects, and usage of the most common scales and modes in occidental music. "UP IN 4THS" by Jeff B. – 2020 Here the mystery of WHY "a root moving up a perfect 4th is the strongest motion in all music" is examined in meticulous detail. I use the Zoom app for live interactive lessons from the comfort of your home. You certainly have many options available regarding choosing an instructor, but I have to assume that you would like to hire the most qualified teacher to guide you on the journey through the wonderful world of music. Everyone moves further, much faster, and is more likely to stay engaged by learning from a master teacher with decades of real-world professional experience to share. I will give you what you need to know, in order to take you where you want to go!
Ear Training

Ear Training

Recognition of intervals, lines, chords, progressions, is a must for every musician. I studied Ear Training as a mandatory part of my studies in Music Theory at the University of Colorado under professors Paris Rutherford (Regent of Jazz Studies - University of North Texas), and Dr. William L. Fowler (Downbeat magazine education editor, Segovia alumnus, and co-inventor of the piezo pickup). The first step is recognizing intervals (the distance between two notes). This is facilitated by assigning a recognizable snippet of a well-known song to each interval both ascending and descending. Next comes harmonic recognition of any two notes sounded together simultaneously. Once interval recognition has been achieved (which for some folks takes a long time, and for others it's a snap), then we move on to chord qualities. Sticking with basic triads and tetrads to begin with, it is easy enough to discern between major triads, minor triads, dominant 7th chords, half-diminished 7ths, and diminished 7ths because, after all, there are only a mere five qualities of chords (if one omits quartals). After chord recognition has been sufficiently achieved, then it is a question of hearing chord motions. This can be a lot trickier. However, since (in tonal musics) the vast majority of chord motions are "circular" (meaning chord roots move up or down around the circle in 4ths or 5ths), it is simplified somewhat. While Ear Training can be extremely tedious and quite time-consuming (and often quite frustrating), the ability to truly hear what is happening inside any piece of music in any style is one of the most rewarding and useful skills a true musician can possess!

Brilliant

Jeff taught me about the essential foundation of music! The movement of notes in 4ths and why they always work and have always worked. Used by every composer who lived or lives - whether they understood why or what they they themselves were doing. It was living the musical laws of the universe with a man lives there and knows it so well that his teaching flows from his own nature. He will bring any student into a new but ancient vision of music theory
