About Laurie

Full service English language arts and fractions lessons for native English speakers and English Language Learners - children and adults - by a fully credentialed, Lead English language arts teacher, National Board Certified Teacher, and M.A. in Education.

Services offered:

1) English as a Second Language instruction (ESL/EFL). The lessons revolve around discussions of interesting documentaries and allow students to systematically learn the vocabulary and expressions they need in order to converse in formal, academic English for their work, science and technology applications, and academia.

2) Reading intervention -

The reading lessons are fun and engaging and involve fluency work with repeated reading of plays combined with comprehension work. Two or three lessons a week for a few months combined with reading interesting lower level/higher interest books on one's own can dramatically improve reading grade level equivalent score. For students with learning disabilities, I utilize research-based interventions within the lessons to help the student overcome the reading difficulties.

3)Writing intervention -

The writing intervention lessons will be dependent upon the needs of the student. Potential lessons may involve working with a student as we both look at a report or paper they have written and help them with common editing errors. The focus of such an appointment is not to fix the mistakes for them, but to teach them, via mini lessons about common errors and how to edit their own papers. Other lessons offered will provide instruction on typical writing genre, such as essays and reports. Each mini lesson will help the student learn how to produce a different part of the written genre and allow the student to learn how to successfully move through all of the stages of the writing process, including brainstorming strategies with graphic organizers, drafting, revising, and editing. The goal of all of these lessons are to develop confidence in being able to move from a blank piece of paper to a fully edited work.

4) SAT and AP English Language and Composition preparation lessons

5) Grades 1 through 8 mathematics lessons:

a)The student's present grade level abilities in mathematics will be assessed.
b)Remediation of areas of weakness will always begin with a problem to help the student to see mathematics conceptually. These problems are usually real life scenarios and students are given hints and tips using hand manipulatives in order to try to find a good solution for the problem in many different ways on their own.
c)Students explain their mathematical thinking, and then I coach the student to figuring out the most efficient means of solving the problem, based upon what they already know, provide any needed mini lessons, and have students revisit their solution to the problem as needed.
d)Students are given more problems of this type, and I coach them to the most efficient means of solving the problems. During this phase of the lessons, students are able to build procedural fluency, while retaining the connection to the conceptual underpinnings of the mathematical concept.
e)I have students explain their mathematical reasoning in how they solved one of the problems.
f)At regular intervals, tutoring sessions tie in multiple concepts learned in fun mathematical game and problem-solving scenarios.
This type of mathematics instruction provides students with the firm conceptual as well as procedural knowledge that they will need for the new state testing that is being developed.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a California Multiple Subjects credential that authorizes me to teach grades K-6 multiple subjects. I have No Child Left Behind authorization to teach these grade levels. I have taught grades 3 and 6 as a student teacher.

Elementary Math

I have taught at the 3rd and 4th grade levels and have completed a graduate certificate program in mathematics instruction for 5th through 8th graders.

English

I am a 17 year Veteran Lead English teacher and teacher trainer. I have a M.A. in Education - Specialization: Teaching English as a Second Language. I am highly trained to remediate reading difficulties.

ESL/ESOL

Laurie is a former National Board certified teacher, lead teacher, and teacher trainer.

She has a master's in education with a specialization of Teaching English as a Second Language and is a California credentialed elementary and secondary teacher.

She has taught all four core subjects at the primary, upper elementary, middle school, and high school level.

She trained other teachers in issues of literacy across the curriculum and English language arts instruction.

She makes learning fun and interesting and pushes you to do your best.

IELTS

I am a 17 year veteran English teacher who was specially trained by my school district to meet the needs of English Language Learners and other remedial students of English. I have a Masters in Education with a specialization of Teaching English as a Second Language. I have been teaching English Language Learners exclusively for the past three years, including preparing learners to take the TOIC, TOEFL, and IELTS test.

My methods go far beyond simply drilling students for the IELTS, although I am willing to do that as well (and have with the IELTS practice materials). I also have created curriculum for seven levels of English Language Learners, based upon my knowledge and training.

Phonics

I taught reading remediation for about six years at Mills Middle School in Rancho Cordova, CA. My students were 7th and 8th graders, but many did not have a firm grasp of phonics and had difficulty sounding out words as they read, limiting their fluency. I used a training system called Syllabication that was created by John Shefelbine that utilizes a quick 10 minutes a day for three weeks in order to get students to achieve better word attack skills. I also created games that went along with this instruction to improve the students command of phonics. Finally, I paired this with reading that was enjoyable, including repeated reading of plays paired with comprehension work in order to improve their reading fluency. These same techniques can be modified and used at any level of instruction.

Prealgebra

I am a 17-year veteran, credentialed classroom teacher. I have taught all four core subjects, but I have been a middle school teacher for the majority of my career. I have been a lead teacher and teacher trainer. I have a Masters in Education and am just completing a graduate course in mathematics instruction for grades five through eight.

Reading

I am a 17 year veteran teacher, teacher trainer, and lead teacher. I was highly trained by my school district in reading remediation.

SAT Reading

I am a former lead English language arts teacher and teacher trainer in the Folsom Cordova School District. I was highly trained by the district to remediate reading and writing problems, and I trained other teachers.

Spelling

I am a former lead English language arts teacher and teacher trainer in the Folsom Cordova School District.

I utilize a unique, developmental form of spelling instruction that begins exactly where each student is having spelling problems and utilizes higher level thinking and sorting of words, so that students use inquiry in order to determine the spelling rules for themselves and find examples of the words in their independent reading book or in real life. By the end of the lesson, the students will have written the spelling words a few times, figured out their own spelling rule and exceptions, and determined other words that meet the rule.

Study Skills

I am a 17 year veteran English language arts and social studies teacher credentialed by the state of California. Since I taught middle school, I had to teach study skills throughout the year to my students. Some of the topics I teach for study skills are pre-reading strategies, think-aloud strategies for informational text reading, three different note-taking strategies (based upon learner profile), strategies for taking notes while reading, how to use electronic flash cards, and metacognitive strategies for memorization and recall, based upon learner style.

TOEFL

I am a 17 year veteran English teacher who was specially trained by my school district to meet the needs of English Language Learners and other remedial students of English. I have a Masters in Education with a specialization of Teaching English as a Second Language. I have been teaching English Language Learners exclusively for the past four years, including preparing learners to take the TOIC, TOEFL, and IELTS test.

My methods go far beyond simply drilling students for the TOEFL, although I am willing to do that as well (and have with the TOEFL practice materials). I also have created curriculum for seven levels of English Language Learners, based upon my knowledge and training.
